For a “shutdown” to matter there would have to be a shutdown of the most impactful of government functions—taxation, regulation, intimidation. The only thing that can shut any of this down would be Outright Revolution.

there are two types of “hippies”...
1) the ones who wanted some changes made in society (they came in a variety of political, or no political , leanings...and after their Twenties, became conservatives.
These types usually came from a traditional family ( faith and patriotism). I marched in a lot of marches but NEVER in the anti-VN WAR ones( I hated commies and was always pro-military).
these types are already in the Tea Party or at least conservative...what is interesting is they still view “big govt when it is controlling of indv freedom” as a negative. ha. these types will return to Christianity as they get older.
2) The second type has never grown up. They are still angry, still believe in victimhood of the minorities, and think that socialism is the answer.
These types you can never change. However, if something hits them personally in their wallet, they will vote conservative ( and call themselves Libertarian) on specific self-centered interests. These types will ditch socialized medicine as soon as their premiums go up.
3) I really don’t see many current “hippies”...they are mostly young people who may or may not use drugs, who have somehow not gotten the benefits of capitalism as they expected would automatically come to them. The past hippies were not into consumerism, but the current ones are all about their Iphones and LED TV’s.
the classic Hippie would now be Libertarian,and so there is hope for them as conservatives have much in common with Libertarians, especially economically.

Last time we had a full-scale onslaught of those MSM pencilnecks in Montana was up around Circle fifteen years or so ago and from the comments people around there still make about their "Honored Guests", the easiest part of moving the MSM here would be keeping them from mass suicide before they'd set foot in the place again.
...then, of course, you'd have to put 'em under SERIOUS Protection 24/7/365 to keep the rednecks, roughnecks and people like me from runnin' 'em around out in the Badlands until they fall into something or get eaten.
