People are often surprised to learn that members of the Bush family support gay marriage, though Laura Bush, her daughter Barbara Bush, and Dick Cheney have declared they believe in marriage equality. (It probably has something to do with George W. Bush's support for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.) Apparently W.'s parents are okay with gay marriage too, since they not only attended a lesbian couple's wedding on Saturday, but served as witnesses as well.
Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen have been together for 12 years and are co-owners of a general store in Kennebunk, Maine. They have been friends with the former First Couple, who own a compound in neighboring Kennebunkport, for years. In an e-mail to the Washington Post, Clement said they asked George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush to be witnesses after thinking about "how blessed we are to be in their lives." She added, "Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being 'real and normal.' "
Since leaving office, George W. Bush has made some vaguley tolerant comments about gay marriage, but he's refused to comment on the issue directly and had nothing to say about his parents' participation in the wedding. H.W.'s office didn't make any sweeping declarations about marriage equality either, saying only, "They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends."
Everything about that picture is sad.
Nice socks!
I regret voting for McCain and Romney. I’m proud I never voted for Old Man Bush.
Marriage is between a man and a woman. Anything else is neither real or normal. If folks have a problem with that, take it up with God. His planet, His rules.
The man who destroyed the Regan reformation!
I was never going to vote for a Bush, but now I’ll really RELISH not doing so.
GOT LUCKY FOLLOWING A GIANT.
Go slobber in the corner you FAKER.
Stay outta da bushes.
um... Bushes
I trusted them both but they didn’t keep their word nor defend their practices. Love their support of the troops but was all that necessary. Overall a D and I’m feeling generous.
The Bushes are completely cynical on the social issues. George H.W> gave lip-service to pro-life after 1980, but his wife made it clear he did it for political expedience. W. was pro-life but his wife and girls made itclear that for him it was political, too. They sent to the girls out some time again to pronounce in favor of same-sex marriage.
Oh Oinkubus, look we’ve scored another “Conservative” convert.
Praise be to... ahhhhh..., well whoever! Right?
There was a reason hubby hated GHWB and was happy he lost in 1992. Not that he liked Bubba at all. But at least you could fight everything Bubba did. I hate to say hubby was right all along about all of the Bushes. But he was. They are just more liberals whose god is government.
Remember, George W. Bush came out this summer and echoed Anthony Kennedy that people against gay marriage were evil.
This is why we love Rockefeller Republicans. Babs and Laura are pro-abortion, too.
GHWB and WJC=two peas in a pod
I regret them all...Dole and Dubya, too. I haven't cast a vote for which I was proud since President Reagan in '84.
Don't be sad, FRiend, get mad as h*ll!
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Why oh why did Reagan pick this RINO douche?
What a compassionate conservative, the Bush clan is a stain on America
