Poll: Sen. Lindsey Graham’s 2014 re-election chances uncertain
The Washington Times ^ | September 25, 2013 | Alex Hopkins & Seth McLaughlin

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham may be in for a bumpy ride in his bid to secure a third term in November 2014, a new poll suggests.

The Clemson University poll released Wednesday found that Mr. Graham enjoys far more tepid support among his fellow Republicans than other state GOP leaders, even as he faces a competitive primary against a trio of conservative challengers. Poll author David Woodard, a Clemson political scientist, found that just 53 percent of the 500 Republicans surveyed hold a favorable view of Mr. Graham, compared to 36 percent who had an unfavorable view.

This stands in stark contrast to South Carolina’s other Republican senator, Tim Scott. Although Mr. Scott has far lower name-recognition numbers among voters, he holds a 69 percent to 6 percent approval-disapproval rating among South Carolina Republicans. GOP Gov. Nikki Haley also is popular with the party base, with a 70 percent to 18 percent approval-disapproval rating.

Mr. Woodard said that the high disapproval margin posed a threat to Mr. Graham, reflecting his often tense relations with conservative and tea party activists in the state. During President Obama’s first term, Mr. Graham backed Mr. Obama’s nominations of Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. More recently, Mr. Graham has pushed for immigration reform and military engagement with Syria.

“Most incumbents have a ‘re-elect regardless’ number in the 30s, so the governor’s numbers are quite strong,” Mr. Woodard told the State newspaper in Columbia. “That cannot be said about Graham.”

There is no difference between the Democrat and the RINO. They both lie and say they are conservative.

I just worry that his replacement could end up being a Democrat statist who essentially agrees with Graham on his most egregious stances.

Graham IS a Democrat Statist. What's to worry about?

Yep, he and McQueeg are emblematic of the GOP problem and as time goes on they side more and more with the leftist Rats.

If the GOP is to survive these turncoats have to be eliminated as they come up for reelection. If they survive we have to give much more thought to a new party which I have been reluctant to support.

If the elitist GOP-e are allowed to go on there will only be one lib party.

Thanks for information. You answered all my questions right here.

You're welcome.

Some times folks don't understand the primary system here in SC. The Green Papers web site is an excellent resource for all things electoral, state and national.

I thought I read that they all agreed to drop out, if not in lead, and let the highest voted guy take out Graham. I could be wrong, I am old, but that was my understanding.

Take a look at #49. Explained there. You’re on the right track.

Ms. Linda Graham is in South Carolina. Don’t know what the neighboring state to the north has to do with it.

Question for the SC ping list...

SC has one of the most conservative GOP House delegations..IMHO, any of them would make a superb senator, a great improvement over Graham. We now have three "lesser-known" announced candidates. I mean them no disrespect by that term. As polls continue to show that Graham is NOT popular among the GOP base in the state, is there a possibility that one of them would decide to go for it, and challenge Graham in the primary? None was willing to do so as yet...it'd mean giving up a very safe House seat..but if they sense weakness, all bets could be off. If, for example, Trey Gowdy announced tomorrow, I think he would instantly become a favorite, and likely cause Cash, Bright, and Mace to drop out. Gowdy would have no trouble raising the $$$, and he'd have a slew of volunteers.

Thoughts?

ken5050:

It has been my hope all along that Gowdy would declare. He still has plenty of time before the primary next June.

Even though I think Mace Cash and Bright are all good candidates, especially Bright, I still hope Trey will announce.

Sarah will pick the winner in S.C. primary just like she did in Texas. That is how we in Texas got our fine Senator Ted Cruz.

Has there been any effort in SC to encourage him to do so?
