Arctic Ocean Predicted To Be Ice Free By 2013 — Oops!

Junk Science: Earth has gained 19,000 Manhattans of sea ice since this date last year, the largest increase on record. There is more sea ice now than there was in mid-September 1990. Al Gore, call your office.

A 2007 prediction that summer in the North Pole could be "ice-free by 2013" that was cited by former Vice President Al Gore in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech has proven to be off . .. by 920,000 square miles. But then Democrats have never been good at math — or climate science.

In his Dec. 10, 2007, "Earth has a fever" speech, Gore referred to a prediction by U.S. climate scientist Wieslaw Maslowski that the Arctic's summer ice could "completely disappear" by 2013 due to global warming caused by carbon emissions as the seas rose to swallow up places like the island of Manhattan.

The inconvenient truth is that planet Earth now has the equivalent of 330,000 Manhattans of Arctic ice, Steve Goddard notes in the blog Real Science. Even before the annual autumn re-freeze was scheduled to begin, he says, NASA satellite images showed an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretched from the Canadian islands to Russia's northern shores. No polar bears were seen drowning.

As the Daily Mail reports, "A chilly Arctic summer has left nearly a million more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year — an increase of 60%." The much-touted Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific froze up and has remained blocked by pack ice all year. More than 20 yachts that had planned to sail it have been left ice-bound and a cruise ship attempting the route was forced to turn back.

It’s a cred killer to predict Climate events shorter than one’s expected life span.

“It’s a cred killer to predict Climate events shorter than one’s expected life span.”

Not for these people. Facts don’t matter; science doesn’t matter. Emotion and level of perceived “caring” matter.

Here is some math: The Navier Stokes equations describe fluid flow with changes in density, and temperature. They are nonlinear, chaotic, with sensitive dependence on initial conditions.

That means that no finite set of records of past states is sufficient to predict non-trivial future states. Predicting weather out beyond 7 days can not be done with confidence. This has been known since Edward Lorenz wrote his 1963 paper “Deterministic Nonperodic Flow”.

And here is the science: The sun is much bigger than the earth. The sun is also described at some levels of abstraction by the Navier Stokes equations. We can’t predict that except in the most trivial way (tomorrow will likely be like today).

Gore issued a statement and said he was now worried about the polar bears dying from over eating and freezing to death. He said it was caused by AGW.

Jean Dixon Effect. Make enough wild "predictions" and by sheer chance some of them might appear to be fulfilled.

Unless it isn't. In which case we'll find out in about 9 minutes. ;^)

I'll take your word on it.

You're talking to an scientific illiterate when it comes to understanding “Deterministic Nonperodic Flow” as I did well enough to pass first year college chemistry and biology but I do understand history and know all this “Never been so Hot” is complete BS because accurate recordings only goes back to the invention of the thermometer in the last two hundred years, more or less.

Which isn't even a a fraction of a tick on earth's existence.

And I know that weather is chaotic and it is as predictable as humanity's future, which is to say anyone(at least according to past behavior)who claims to know what will happen beyond the foreseeable future is either a fool or a charlatan after your wallet.

And neither should be allowed the power to control your life.

Gore issued a statement and said he was now worried about the polar bears dying from over eating and freezing to death.

I'm sure he's speaking from experience.

Since moving to his luxurious pad on the California coast he's bloated himself on expensive Russian Beluga caviar and endangered Chilean Sea Bass while his thermostat works overtime to chill his mammonian size mansion and trying to get "Happy endings" from unwitting masseuses!

Of course frozen, overeating polar bears is just another sign Global Warming is real, just as if they were dying from hunger and heat prostration were just as valid proof of Man's carbon footprint on the climate..
