House passes spending bill to defund Obamacare
The Washington Times ^ | September 20, 2013 | Stephen Dina

House Republicans passed their stopgap funding bill Friday to keep government open while terminating the new health care law, setting up a final showdown next week with Senate Democrats and President Obama who have firmly rejected that.

The 230-189 vote, which split almost exclusively along party lines, is the precursor to the big action next week, when the Senate is expected to strip out the health care provisions and send the bill back to the House — where Republicans will have to decide whether they can accept it at that point.

All sides are racing a Sept. 30 deadline, which is when current government funding runs out. The new measure would fund the government through Dec. 15, essentially at last year’s levels, and would leave the budget sequesters in place.

Can 0.00bama fund it through an EO, as an ‘emergency’ measure, bearing in mind that 0.00 has made so many changes to legislation through EOs, rather than Congress? (This is NOT a suggestion, merely a query by a Canuck who does not know the ins and outs of the US government, particularly funding.)

Thanks.

I’m not so sure. The AFL-CIO has thusfar been unable to roll Obama for their waivers. If they jump on this in the Senate and decide to support it, things could get REEEEEEAL interesting for the Dems.

You fight to win, but if you lose, the fact that you fought is a moral victory, so don't give up the fight... Look in the book Revelation 21:8... it characterizes the kind of people who will be cast into hell; the first mentioned is "the cowardly". It is the brave who fight a war with little chance of winning, but it is the coward who surrenders and accepts the status quo so as to go on enjoying the comforts of the ruling class. To hell with the cowardly!

The House should do this with Medicare and Social Security.

No reason why we fund those programs at all when both are generational theft

You lose each and every fight in which you do not engage.

Can you just imagine this coming Sunday's NFL line up and then reading, " this game forfeited by....... team because they are odds on favored to lose by three touchdowns?"

Yup....This for show. Watch how fast they cave when the Senate sends it back.

I'll credit them for this first step, but the real test will come next in the showdown with the Senate. That's when we'll really have to lean on them to stand their ground.

Constitutionally, the House holds all the cards on appropriation of funds. Spending bills must originate in the House, and if the House doesn't include something in the budget, the Senate's only choices are to (a) convince the House to amend the bill or (b) block the whole bill. If the two houses fail to agree on the budget or continuing funding resolution, there is no money to spend. Upholding its Constitutional prerogatives requires courage that the GOP House has yet to display, but we can't accept their cowardly excuses anymore. The GOP House doesn't think we know the rules, so it's time to make sure they know we do - and that we're watching in advance of the 2014 primaries.

Win this thing or don't come home, unless your lifeless body is carried on your shield.

In before the "I earned that money and it's not a tax on the younger generation" highly indignant posts?

230-189 is “along partisan lines?” And five RINOs abstained, so that means that 19 Dems voted to defund? Why is that not “bipartisan?”

Remember, this CR was passed with the votes of Democrats. This is a bi-partisan CR.

That’s more “bipartisan” than the passage of the actual ACA bill!
