(CNN) -- Police in North Carolina shot and killed a man running toward them Saturday morning -- but he may have just been looking for help after a car wreck.
Officers responded to a "breaking and entering" 911 call at a home in Charlotte.
The homeowner told dispatchers that a man had been knocking on her door repeatedly.
Police say that when they got to the scene, a man matching the caller's description ran toward them.
One of the officers fired his stun gun, but it was "unsuccessful." Another officer then opened fire, police said.
Jonathan Ferrell died at the scene. He was shot several times.
He was unarmed.

It’s sad when some LEOs start developing a FPS game mentality.
“This is cold blooded murder. “
Not if you are a cop.
A terrible tragedy/crime. Since he is white, I expect the media and the pols won’t care.
The evil in the world has been very successful at stirring up so much anger and hatred, that people are not even willing to help each other, out of fear of getting killed.
Why didn’t the caller ask the man what he needed? And I ask that, questioning myself, and how I try to protect my family from strangers. I don’t trust anyone anymore, esp people who look different from me.
This is a horrible statement about our country, as well as a terrible miscarriage of justice.
We really have to start to turn this ship around. We are not headed in the right direction anymore.
Whoops. He was black. The cop is white. Well this will get a lot of attention.
Is that right? If so, I’m amazed that the first sentence of the CNN story didn’t say “. . . a black man running toward them. . . .”
I guess the reporter and the editor weren’t fully awake when they wrote this.
I guess there wasn’t a dog around to kill...
Police have charged Officer Randall Kerrick with voluntary manslaughter — a felony. He turned himself in Saturday afternoon and was being held early Sunday on a $50,000 bond.
Will this be brought in a court of law- how the officer really he shot killed this man for no reason at all.I cannot see how he can use the defence of,i felt my life was in danger..So i used my gun to defuse the situation ?
The poor guy was probably in shock, and may have had a injury that he thought needed immediate medical attention.
Prison time for these bozos!
Does anyone else think that America has too many cops with too much time on their hands?
More than just occasionally I see a driver getting a ticket with three police cars lined up behind him.
“IF it moves shoot it!” Is THAT the mentality cops are taught?
Nothing is more dangerous than a frightened police officer.
To Serve and Protect!
Themselves...
Our enemies have more protections from the rules our military operate under than the American citizen has from the police.
The black community would be wise to lay the blame for some of this at the feet of black criminals who have fed the stereotype so frequently that the cops in Charlotte (and elsewhere) are so edgy that they immediately fear a black man running at them. Not many sane people run towards a drawn weapon. Maybe it was suicide by cop or some version of the knockout game. How are they supposed to know these days??
CMPD officer charged with voluntary manslaughter in fatal shooting
Who runs while in shock? I'm guessing drugs are involved.
He will say he feared for the safety of his partner who had made the judgement to discharge his tazer (and missed thus it being “unsuccessful”). Thats why he fired at the man. Not out of fear for his life, but because his partner made the wrong decision for both of them.
It is very commendable that he turned himself in and hopefully wants to do the right thing, but the police union lawyers will in no way let him take the honorable route.
