Truth be told, I don't watch TV at all. Don't even have a TV.

I fully agree with Diana in Wisconsin's point made here.

And I bet you haven’t substituted Free Republic for TV and when you surf the Internet you turn off your monitor because it sort of looks like a TV. ;)

I GOTTA have my Green Bay Packers, though - so I guess I’m sort of a hypocrite during Football Season. If I had applied for season tickets to Lambeau the minute I was born (53 years ago), I *might* have had season tickets by now and this wouldn’t be an issue, LOL! :)

I freely admit to spending a fair amount of time on FR.

However, FR is interactive and educational, unlike TV which encourages brain rot.

You mentioned O’Reilly and Hannity in a previous reply. Brain rot. Should be an assault on your intelligence.

There’s not any real loss in efficiency using the remote over the keyboard. Sure maybe it takes twice as long to put in the characters, but big deal. With active search that they all use you’re not putting in more than 12 characters anyway, so you’re talking 10 seconds to get those characters in instead of 5. That’s just not a change. And of course if the person doesn’t have a smartphone or tablet then they’re still remote driving.

Because it’s only $35 I see a lot of people buying it now. But by next year most won’t even be using it, kind of like Wiis. Smart TVs already can get content from iPads and iPhones, they’re on you network and can get shared content from other things on your network, and even if that doesn’t work half the iToys/ clones have HDMI output so you can always jack in directly.

In fact, I don’t type in my YouTube searches on my iPad. I use Siri and just talk to it. It works.

Actually I agree with you to some extent. The new new TVs are going to integrate IPad/iPhone control and YouTube apps. But people don’t buy new TVs every year. Chromecast and the clones that are sure to follow will fill that void.

I have AppleTV. Can someone please compare and contrast Chromecast with Apple TV?

I would like to drop Directv but I would still like to watch Blue Bloods and Longmire and college football. I know I can get old movies from Netflix or Amazon so I don’t worry about that, but how do I get the two shows and college football?

We watch Longmire on Netflix. Of course it's probably last seasons shows, but I can be patient. We gave up on cable tv a long time ago. The only thing I miss is being able to see regular season St. Louis Cardinals games. I would do MLB TV, but the black-out restrictions are a joke. That's OK. Post Season is almost here.

I don’t know much about Apple TV but I suspect it doesn’t provide a keyboard function to use to search for content. That is the big advantage that Chromecast has. It uses devices like the iPad as a remote.

Other than that they are likely to be similar.

Do a YouTube search for Chromecast and you will figure it out.

It’s the difference between a newspaper and a library. Getting the content you want when you want from a vast supply is different from getting whatever short-lived drivel someone else chooses for you.

I have a Roku HD and a Roku 3 hooked up to HDTVs (one of which also has my desktop PC hooked to it). Given that I don’t particularly want to watch shows on a small screen (and can already use certain apps to do so if I wished), what further benefit would the Chrome device give me?

I understand that, but as a former salesman, I KNOW ... you only give a choice of two .... anything more is confusion.

a hundred .. two hundred .. a thousand ... channels ... too much

Of course, if you like to maintain a specialized channel ... military, f'rinstance ... it's good to have a choice, but my time is better served watching an occasional movie ... and if there's no movie we're interested .in ... we go to bed and play around..

Sort of the same thing here. We are remodeling but I still live on the property in my 5th wheel. No DTV for the last 5 months. I get Duck Dynasty on the A&E app on my iPad and regular TV thru an antennae. I miss a few other shows so I am trying to find a free way to watch them. I do have Apple TV and stream DD thru that. Only watch an hour or so and them I’m sawing logs! :) lol

The end product of a Chromecast is you get to watch something you have selected from YouTube or Netflix on an iPad or iPhone or most other similar gadgets and watch it on your HDTV.

You can already do that with your Rokus. So the only advantage with a Chromecast, assuming you have the supporting gadget, is a much easier search since you have a keyboard and, in the case of the iPad/iPad, voice input. So finding things is quicker. That's really it.

Most of the TV viewing in our house is dominated by our kids. Ages 3 and 5..."

People are free to run their families as they wish, but personally, I find the idea of a three-year-old flipping through netflix and youtube videos a little disturbing.

I can’t disagree with that. But, OTOH, I’m sure the authors purpose was to paint a picture of the Chroomecast as being so easy to use that a child can use it.

And, being the grandfather of the worlds most beautiful 3 year old, I am constantly reminded of how easy these young kids adapt to technology that was first seen on Earth less than 5 years ago.

Me also, I have a Logitech Revue, an earlier "Google TV" device -- the only thing new seems to be the "cast" stuff which is not useful to me. No Smartphone or tablet and the old Logitech already came with a laptop-like keyboard. We actually don't even use it for videos, just browsing.

Also, it always makes me nauseous to watch Google employees give one of their marketing pitches (just watched the one for Chromecast on Youtube). Just dripping with "We are going to make your life better for you, ON OUR TERMS AND WE DEFINE BETTER".
