WILLINGBORO It seems ripped from the pages of Dickens: A hungry child approaches the school cafeteria worker, meal in hand. The worker promptly throws the meal in the trash and sends the child away unfed. Why? The child's parents have let the lunch account run dry.

What’s the difference?
If they have money, they get underfed. If they have no money, they don’t get fed.
Why throw it away?
>> The child’s parents have let the lunch account run dry.
I bet the “child’s parents” are paying plenty of local taxes necessary to feed the fat, unionized baby sitters.
Willingboro has a huge black population.
Why should [tax-funded] schools be responsible for feeding kids? Isn’t that up to their parents?
When I went to school, if I forgot my lunch $$, I didn’t eat.
The whole gist of the article is that the kids have to apply for the “free or reduced lunch program” so the schools quit losing money.
If they are not, *I* am! (not in NJ, but in my state)
In Jersey, most of our very high property taxes go to pay for the crazy, convoluted public school system in this state.
In our schools, kids are given one "gratis" regular lunch if they don't pay. After that, they get only a cheese sandwich and milk until their account is rectified. My kids don't have to worry; I make their lunches. They don't even want to buy the school's offerings. Not only because of taste but because with a scant 30 minutes for lunch, they hardly have time to eat as it is, much less stand in line.
Census 2000[edit source]

More regulations — any food taken from the vendor is considered “sold” and cannot be returned and resold to another customer.
At our school, they are allowed to charge until about $15, and the school sends a collection letter. If payment is not received after a week, they give the kids a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a carton of milk.
My grand daughter takes her lunch. She can’t stand most of the school lunches.

Here in Marion County, FL, the kid gets a PBJ sandwich and a note to take home to his parents about the lunch money deficit. They won’t let a kid go hungry. What’s with the libs in NJ anyway? Is there a school millage vote coming up soon or some other raise-school-tax drive?
Oh, sorry. That kid's a cracker. Never mind...
It worked when I went to school.
If I was a kid I’d probably dodge the chickpeas, fried grasshoppers, etc from Moo and go hungry or bring a peanut butter sandwich. But it is the Socialist Republic of Maryland which probably dictates that you must eat school lunches and that contraband (anything) that you bring from home is barred.
Because the food stamps get spent on other things.
