"For the life of me, I can't figure out why people are so attracted to our family," writes Phil Robertson. And that was before Duck Dynasty, the Robertson family's reality show, smashed records for a nonfiction cable program when 11.8 million viewers checked out the season premiere in mid-August.
Phil, as nearly everyone calls him, is the bearded, 67-year-old progenitor of the backwoods Louisiana clan that made it big selling duck calls and found its way into millions of other American homes through the previous three seasons of Duck Dynasty.
The A&E network bills the show as "funny, functional, and family-filled." In the realm of reality shows, that's a surprising reversal of the formula for success. Standard reality fare is "friction and fits of rage and four-letter words," as the second of Phil's four sons, Jase, described it in an interview.
It's also a surprising reversal in the story of a family whose earlier chapters weren't so "happy, happy, happy" - as Phil likes to refer to life now. The catchphrase supplies the title of his autobiographical book. In it, Phil recounts a miserable episode early in his marriage to "Miss Kay" when his drinking and all-night partying almost ruined the lives of the whole family.

I like them because they are not afraid to stand for what they believe in,
People like them because they have the Judeo-Christian values this nation was founded on instead of spinless crap we get out of hollywood and Capitol Hill

I think Americans are starting to miss the old pre-”diversity” and pre-”multicultural” America. It takes us back to when America was America and not the sewer for the world that it has become.
“Standard reality fare is “friction and fits of rage and four-letter words,”
True, but Hard Core Pawn still cracks me up!
That’s all. God is rewarding them for being honest and true.
I think you may be right. However, my wife and I tried to watch it and did not like the show. If it is family oriented and popular that is a “Good Thing!”
From golfing at a private club and returning that nite to raid a water trap for it’s abundant Amphibian inhabitants,
that’s funny right there!
Because the Robertsons and the Simpsons are the only functional families on TV. And the Simpsons are cartoon characters. Its good to watch a show that has happy, loving people for a change. And no homos.
Phil recounts a miserable episode early in his marriage to “Miss Kay” when his drinking and all-night partying almost ruined the lives of the whole family.
And so the attacks begin...
Will Sadie be caught twerking?
1. They are a real FAMILY who sticks together and
2. Built their own business, doing what they love doing
3. They’re CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES who believe in the same things our founders did and STILL live that way.
-I for one wish I could be them.
They are just traditional American normal, sincere and earnest men and women of their word.
With American culture having devolved into such a vomit-inducing sewer, it’s probably like a refreshing liferaft to encounter something that actually speaks to some traditional values and mid-american sensibilities. Qualities the entertainment industry long ago deserted, other than to condescendingly savage. That’s my guess.
....because they are not phony. They are who and what they are without shame, with confidence with simple unpretentious pride mixed with a good deal of humility.
spineless, i think you mean
there is no lack of SPIN in it heh heh.
these guys are believers and live it out like so many church ladies and church gentlemen don’t — with JOY!!
the good Lord is the reason rednecks have so much fun! yes rednecks have their excesses... when rednecks start to exalt themselves (e.g. hold mah beer and watch this) then they are heading for a quick spill... same when they get it on in bed with anyone but their faithful spouses... but oh literally by heaven above God never made this universe to be a kill joy! God made it to seek to fill it with joy! BUT, we can’t make it about ourselves. Once we did (and the devil is the snickering facilitator in the corner) then the joy went away.
I love HCP for the entertainment value.
C: I wanna pawn dis ring. I needs five hundred fifdy dollars.
E: *weighs and examines it* I can give you a $70 loan.
C; whatda mean? I paids 1,200 for dat ring! No. You wills give me 550! What your goon doin here?
E: here’s your ring. Bye!
Gets escorted/dragged outside swearing at everyone.
Ah, Detriot in 2013.
Not really “pride” as it has been known in the fallen world... we sometimes call that egotism and that is a huge downer... it is a mix of joy and gladness and glorifying God and not caring about themselves beyond that. That is a recipe for serious JOY and FUN and LOVE and GRATITUDE and BENEVOLENCE and all sorts of wondrous things!
They recently got joined by their beardless preacher brother. Oh my what a chance to share the gospel and to show among other things that it doesn’t say “stop doing anything pleasurable” but rather “do all the pleasurable things right.” I hope they take full advantage of that.
Me too. The first Duck Dynasty episode that I saw was just too slapstick silly. But there was so much hype about the show that I went back and gave it another chance. Now I really enjoy the show.
It turns out that I just caught a bad episode originally. So you might want to give Duck Dynasty one more try.
As Uncle Si would say, "And that's a fact, Jack."
“Spineless” was what I meant. I think I changed it and after I saw it “posted” I thought oh what the heck.
Joy is correct. Being a retired Pastor I have seen my share of circular firing squads in churches...Kind of reminds me of the GOP..ha ha. Too old to be anything buy joyful at this point. No matter how bad it gets here..Here..is not our point.Eternity is.
Be Blessed
