Five teenagers were jailed on hate crime charges after police said they fired an assault-style pellet gun at a man in the French Quarter and yelled homophobic and racist slurs.
George Brown, 18; O'na Reed, 19; Jazz Henry, 17; and two juveniles were arrested Sunday (Sept. 1) after police say they fired pellets from an air assault rifle, injuring a man who was seated on his front steps in the French Quarter.
Their arrests followed a report by a man who said he was sitting on the steps of his front porch in the 1100 block of Burgundy Street around 11:30 p.m. and talking on the phone when he saw a car driving towards him, going the wrong way up the street, records obtained from Orleans Parish Criminal District Court say.
The man told police that several people inside the car started shouting homophobic and racial slurs at him, before reaching for pellet guns and firing at him. The man was struck several times and suffered a cut on his forearm and bruising to his shoulder and back as a result of the attack. The car then sped away, up Burgundy Street before turning on Governor Nichols Street and disappearing, the man told police.

5 arrested on hate crime charges after man in French Quarter reports being fired on by pellet gun, called homophobic slur
When Jazz Henry was a little baby....oh wait. That’s John Henry.
Never mind.
“...assault-style pellet gun...”
Oh, please!
Being shot at with a pellet gun after making racial or homophobic slurs is a ‘hate crime’. Being shot at with a REAL gun and/or beaten to a pulp isn’t a ‘hate crime’. They love you unless they say otherwise, right?
Haven’t been back to the chocolate city since Katrina and Nagin....My money stays in my vanilla hands.
I wonder if there will be any blacklash from this.
And Rush Limbaugh says “Words have Meaning”?
Not the words in this sentence. AIR assault rifle? TACTICAL Airsoft pistol? Ammunition?
These words are non-sense
6mm plastic balls!
Oh,,,the horror..!!! /s
Back in the early to mid ‘70’s I lived on that block of Burgundy Street. It was a very, very well to-do neighborhood then. I considered myself very fortunate to have the means to live there in my late teens to early 20’s.
Sad to see the vermin mess the place up. These punk kids must have Northern roots, because NOLA born blacks didn’t behave like that. Oh, how times have changed.
Oh yes they do.
I lived in New Orleans too.
True, but they're written by people that cringe at merely hearing the word "gun". Notice how every rifle is described as an "assault rifle" these days? It's never just called a "rifle".
Back in the 70’s southern blacks still had cultural memories of what happened when southern whites got pushed too far.
Proves that when they use the term “assault” they’re only talking about the way something looks.
“Air Soft rifle” doesn’t sound quite so scary or evil.
Does it fly in and assault?
It still is an upscale neighborhood, but there is no fence around the french quarter to keep people out.
Three words I never thought I'd see bolted together.
Yup, but not alone, the SUV is leading the attack.
