SACRAMENTO (CBS13) At Florin High School, every student gets a free lunch, even if they can afford to pay for it, and CBS13 has discovered that a lot of that free food ends up in the trash.
Throwing away food is just the beginning of a drain on your taxpayer dollars.
Last year, 14 percent of students paid for their own meals because they didnt qualify for free lunch.
The federal government [now] allows, if 80 percent or more of the school is eligible for free lunch, the paid students, we would feed them for free, said Michelle Drake with the Elk Grove Unified School District.
In other words, Florin High is opting to provide free lunch to the entire student body on your dime.

...no. The drain is from buying them in the 1st place, nitwit! The kids are throwing away the food because it SUCKS!! AND SO DOES THE MOOCH THAT SET UP THIS BS FOOD!!!
Now it’s time to force feed right?
People don’t value something that doesn’t cost them anything.
Are kids allowed to bring their own? And since its a high school are they allowed to leave campus and go to a drive-thru?
Boy I would like that for my chickens!
The students should be issued food stamps redeemable at local restaurants. </sarc>
But is part of it the new lousy food pushed by Michelle Obama? I’ve heard stories of how the new allegedly healthier food is not going over well with the kids.
This is a good example of unintended consequences too. These kids aren’t eating the allegedly healthier food. They are throwing food away, and probably stopping at 7-11 or such places on the way home from school, and eating junk food there. Efforts such as Michelle Obama’s push for healthier food in school could actually increase consumption of junk food. Just a thought.
Good for mom and grandma and man of the hour to trade with local dealers ...
I can hardly wait to see what Michelle has put on the "free lunch" menu!
I’m sure the fact that the food sucks is a part of this as well. Toss that in with the fact that school kids are, in general, rebellious and you have a lot of “free” food in the trashcan.
Nobody appreciates ‘free’. People appreciate things they have to work for. That’s why 0bama’s people trash ‘free’ housing.
‘free’ should be reserved for the elderly and the disabled. All others work and get what they work for.
Wait until the feds see how many Americans are going to refuse to choke down their ObamaCare garbage. Most Americans are going to be throwing it in the garbage too.
These days, the drive-thru comes to many high schools. The cafeterias now look like mall food courts with your choice of Taco Bell, McDonald’s, Chicken Shack and Subway along side the regular freebie mystery meat lunch trays. You get one guess which meals are trashed.
For any of you who live close to a school, take the time to go behind the building where the dumpsters are after the ‘free lunch’ time. Even before this debacle, the dumpster were full of uneaten ‘free’ food paid for by the taxpayers.
It's a good one. What I observed is that most kids brought in candy bars, chips, soda and those energy drinks with questionable ingredients. A few brought in nuts, nacho chips and salsa, sunflower seeds or something else healthy.
A lot of schools that serve kids with economic needs have a program where once during the day they get a fresh fruit or veggie break. It's a real pain to keep it sanitary and distribute and pick up afterwords, but actually it's surprising. The kids do eat the fruit or vegetable if it's good quality, and use it to develop their pitching arms if it's disgusting.
One might get the idea that the "poor" students aren't hungry. But wait, I thought the "poor" would all starve if they weren't given free food at school.
*does not compute*
My neice’s high school had Chik-fil-A too
