E-Cigarettes Finding New Users in Teens
Time ^ | Sept. 05, 2013 | Alexandra Sifferlin

Touted as a way to quit smoking, the latest data raise concerns that electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may actually be a gateway for teens into tobacco use.

~snip he said. “Nicotine is a highly addictive drug. Many teens who start with e-cigarettes may be condemned to struggling with a lifelong addiction to nicotine and conventional cigarettes.”

Most addictions to nicotine start at a young age,...suggest that a vast majority of students who use e-cigarettes also turn to conventional tobacco products as well.

~snip Whether e-cigarettes are actually safer than regular cigarettes isn’t clear; a recent study found that e-cigarettes can cause increased resistance in the airways, making it harder to breathe, within minutes of inhalation of the vapors, while other studies have suggested the products can help smokers to quit.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently studying the data on electronic cigarettes and plans to issue a regulatory rule on the products soon. ~snip

The agency’s rule will certainly take into consideration the question of how teens are using e-cigarettes, and will consider studies that investigate whether the products serve as a gateway to other tobacco use. “About 90 percent of all smokers begin smoking as teenagers. We must keep our youth from experimenting or using any tobacco product,” Dr. Tim McAfee, the director of the CDC Office on Smoking and Health said in a statement.

If, as the results suggest, e-cigarette use is tied to tobacco use among teens, then electronic cigarettes could be just as enabling as conventional cigarettes for nicotine addictions. “These dramatic increases suggest that developing strategies to prevent marketing, sales, and use of e-cigarettes among youth is critical,” said McAfee.

God has a wicked sense of humor. Hindus call it Karma. It’s a bitch.

E-cigarettes just prove for the billionth time in human history that God given human ingenuity and brilliance beats central planning and lies.

Anti-smoking big Phrma funded front groups, and greedy liberal states are going to be as poor as a bum in Detroit. They didn’t see this coming. I didn’t. But I thank God for e-cigs.

It’s not just incest or kiddie porn.

Losertarians would allow you to marry your donkey, goat or poodle. They see no societal role in controlling nicotine addiction of kids or perverts like Sandusky. They don’t care if kids can’t read, have babies at 13 or get molested. They simply say it’s someone’s problem, but not theirs.

Many of them are stoners or addicts themselves and they wrap them selves in a twisted banned of freedom. Fortunately conservatives have largely rejected their bankrupt ideology.

Good grief.......the tobacco hatred of some around here causes them to throw common sense right out the window.

That you think it is the role of the government to raise your child is your business, I am quite capable of raising mine without that degree of nanny statism.

A certain amount of laws/rules/regulations are a necessity for civil common existence - but at some point a line has to be drawn about when enough is enough.

I have no problem with e-cogs not being sold to those under 18, my problem is with those who are pushing for it and the actual reasons it is being pushed. This is statist incrementalism at its worst - the final goal is to have them completely removed from the market because of the players in this first step (age restriction) are losing mega bucks.

Oh, it matters no matter what YOU say.

Come back when you realize a hole in your end of the boat is still a hole in the boat.

Not if informed people get it and won’t let them (them being our neighbors in office who make laws).

I’m lazy. The other people who were former smokers and were hurting their health* and switched to ecigs did a great job of kicking the Pravda STATE RUN MEDIA alarmist headlines Up and down the sidewalk for public amusement. On the New York Times blog, the Washington Post blog, and the USA today blog.

God gave us gifts that we didn’t even know we had. We don’t need government cheese.

Not saying that it OUGHT to be taxed, but that it’s likely... nothing has fundamentally changed here. Still a godless place headed towards more and more godlessness.

This algore Internet invention thingy is brilliant.

You are exposing yourself as a fool for the whole world to see.

And with that, lots of cynical plans about taxing something “bad” (I always always say now, it’s the use not the item that is bad) and using that to fund something “good.” Leaving one planted firmly in a permanent hypocrisy situation.

I’m a God-praisin’ fool, antideviltarian, and see the folly of all world-based systems. Do you want to go to hell on the port or starboard side? That’s the size of the question and Satan laughs at the debate.

Maybe I don’t grok what you are saying. I’ve been studying Python so you want to quote some Monty Python?

Anyhow, yeah it’s godless, not as godless yet as it could be, but pretty markedly so compared to the past. I could not care less about political systems right now. What matters is huggin’ that big ole Lion of Judah and cheerin’ Him again. Wherever you are, with what you have. Then with the power you reap, exercise whatever influence He has given you to pull things in a godly direction. Lots of questions about how to manage a government will get cleared up. Lots of them.

You have no problem with it, but some do.

Laws against a lot of things are considered “nanny state” by somebody. There are people who think there should be zero age of consent, that parents should be allowed to have sex with their child from birth. Are laws against that too much nanny state too?

I dunno. I’m just a jackass with an Internet connection.

I don’t Have a beard wear a robe or sandals.

Think about the irony here. And God’s sense of humor.

Humans who were as greedy as Adam thought that they could lie and invent a secondhand smoke story in order to sell gums and patches and enrich Big pharmaceutical companies that manufacture them. In the meantime the poor guy who works at a factory all day and wants to just have a beer and a cigarette with his friends after 10 hours of work can go outside in the freezing cold or rain. It will coerce him to buy our gum. As long as Pfizer gets rich.

And their front groups can pay for the lease on their Mercedes Benz E350 and BMW 328i.

Electronic cigarettes and the human brilliance that created it put a big monkey wrench into their whole central planning scheme.

Just like Fracking screwed the global warming We can control the temperature of the planet Earth in the middle of a solar system in the Milky Way galaxy.

Mock God at your own risk.

No, I don't believe so - but what does that have to do with the topic at hand and the cretins promoting things such as this in order to only protect their bottom line and their share of the government money teat.
