Germany’s Energy Poverty: How Electricity Became a Luxury Good
Der Spiegel ^ | September 04, 2013 – 07:15 PM | (Spiegel Staff)

Posted on 09/04/2013 4:13:30 PM PDT by Olog-hai

… The government predicts that the renewable energy surcharge added to every consumer’s electricity bill will increase from 5.3 cents today to between 6.2 and 6.5 cents per kilowatt hour—a 20-percent price hike.

German consumers already pay the highest electricity prices in Europe. But because the government is failing to get the costs of its new energy policy under control, rising prices are already on the horizon. Electricity is becoming a luxury good in Germany, and one of the country’s most important future-oriented projects is acutely at risk.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan two and a half years ago, Merkel quickly decided to begin phasing out nuclear power and lead the country into the age of wind and solar. But now many Germans are realizing the coalition government of Merkel’s CDU and the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) is unable to cope with this shift. …

Fortunately, the technology to make ones own electricity is still available.

This is not the first time that Germany has made a monumental strategic blunder. The availability of reliable cheap electricity correlates closely with prosperity and material well being. Not only will German consumers pay more and consume less, but German industry will become less productive. If then German economy contracts, the EU suffers.

After the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan two and a half years ago, Merkel quickly decided to begin phasing out nuclear power and lead the country into the age of wind and solar.

The biggest issue with Nuclear is the fact we have been using the wrong type of Nuclear power for the last 40 years, we should have started using the type developed by the Oak Ridge Laboratories in the late 60’s early 70’s. The type of reactor than can BURN old fissile material and isotopes and is virtually meltdown proof....

Instead we sat on it too long and the Chinese will be selling these reactors BACK to us because GE and the rest of the Nuclear industry (with heavy leanings from the Nuclear Defense Industry) had their head so far up Washington D.C. butt that they could see daylight...

We’re heading down the same road with the demonization and elimination via regulatory fiat of coal. If it weren’t for fracked natgas showing up to take its place, we’d really be in trouble.

Wind power is a complete disaster

...Denmark, the world’s most wind-intensive nation, with more than 6,000 turbines generating 19% of its electricity, has yet to close a single fossil-fuel plant. It requires 50% more coal-generated electricity to cover wind power’s unpredictability, and pollution and carbon dioxide emissions have risen (by 36% in 2006 alone)....

You’re right. The Green anti carbon, anti nuclear policies of the Obama administration with all its rules, regulations and fiats are hollowing out the economy. The Greens are already attacking fracking. They have stalled pipelines and gutted the coal industry. In fact if it weren’t for exports, there would be almost no US coal industry. The mirage of economic well being will quickly disappear when Obama can no longer borrow and print money. Young Americans don’t realize it but their standard of living will be much lower than their grandparents. Hope they enjoy MTV and the decriminalization of drugs. American equivalent of the Roman circus.

It is a surcharge - the .$065 is in ADDITION to the normal cost of the power, taxes, etc.

This sounds like the German engine of the EU is about to sputter to a halt. Also, hungry, cold desperate people tend to do desperate things. Large numbers of such desperate people will be a major problem to the German government.

In the near future, an average three-person household will spend about €90 a month for electricity.

Hey, wait a minute ... that's $118.86 (USD). It may be relatively high compared to "too cheap to meter" nuke-based power but that's hardly high cost.

No, that's the renewal energy surcharge. Yes, just the surcharge is about 60% of your total electricity generation cost.

My total cost is about the same as yours.

odd they don't say what the total price of a KHour is... not that i can find any way

or is the 6.5cents supposed to be the total cost, cause if it is, that's a little over 1/2 what i pay here

13 cents a kWHr in New York last I checked.
Of course, that includes the subsidies the regular users pay to the Solar Welfare Bastards. They get to sell their excess power at a premium whether the utility needs it or not. BUT does NOT include Federal, state and local tax credits for installing Solar Panel which for example, $20,000 of tax credits on a $25,000 installation.
So when ever you see a solar panels installation on a house you should realize that your tax dollars are paying for it.
Don’t throw a rock unless you want to go to jail.
