Michael Eric Dyson, a King admirer and hard leftist himself, makes this point unmistakably clear in his, I May Not Get There With You: The True Martin Luther King, Jr.
Blasting away at the “the conservative misappropriation” of King, Dyson shows, not that King would have supported much of the left’s agenda, but that he in fact did do so. For starters, King resoundingly endorsed what is today called “affirmative action.” King insisted that “the nation must not only radically readjust its attitude toward the Negro in the compelling present, but must incorporate in its planning some compensatory compensation from the handicaps he inherited from the past.”
Moreover, King envisioned a redistributive scheme that he characterized as “massive.” “I am proposing,” King remarked, “that, just as we granted a GI Bill of Rights to war veterans, America launch a broad-based and gigantic Bill of Rights for the Disadvantaged, our veterans of the long siege of denial.”
Interestingly, King eventually came to think that his earlier belief that American institutions could be “reformed” was a mistake. Rather, because America was “born in genocide,” “racial hatred,” and “racial supremacy,” nothing less than “a reconstruction of the entire society, a revolution of values” was demanded. After all, “a nation that put as many Japanese in a concentration camp as” America did during World War II will think nothing of putting “black people in a concentration camp” as well.
This “revolution of values” that he desired King called “democratic socialism.”

There is one final detail concerning this icon that enriches the irony of “Reagan conservatives” doing their best to transform King into a one of their own: King despised Ronald Wilson Reagan.

To most people alive today Martin Luther King, Jr. is as much a figure of mythology as John F. Kennedy. They weren’t adults when either was alive. They have no memory of America during those years. All they have to go on is what they were told in school and what they’ve seen on television.

MLK was a very poor student and it's clear that he ignored his Bible studies as a so-called "theological" student. On the other hand, he was very diligent when it came to absorbing and mastering the instructions while at the Highlander Communist Training School. That's the real King that those of us born in the 1940s know about. Younger people have heard only the endlessly-repeated myths about this most un-American of traitors.
It's fitting that Obama wraps himself into persona of Marxist Luther King. Both hate President Ronald Reagan. Both hate the Patriots of our American military. Both support reparations. Both support the minimum wage. Both are on board with reparations. And both are the slaves of unions.

You are right about all of the mythology surrounding Dr. MLK Jr. who has been all but deified in our history, our politics, our culture, and our schools. In my daughter’s public school, all they teach about is MLK Jr and Cesar Chavez. Practically nothing about our Founding Fathers, legendary industrialists, or great military leaders.
There is indeed a dark side of Dr. MLK Jr. which is rarely even mentioned. Even though he was a man of the cloth, he smoked and drank. He plaigerized speeches. He was a notorious womanizer who cheated on his wife with wild abandon, and he associated with known Communists and embraced just about every Left wing cause of his day. This IMHO is not a man worthy of national holiday and so much undue glorification.
It is worth noting that when JFK was assassinated, he too was all but canonized and raised to a level of cult personality status. Fawning books were written like 1000 Days, and Johnny We Harldy Knew You, and then all of that mindless fawning crap mythology about Camelot.
At least though, in the case of JFK, after a few decades had passed since his assassination, a number of professional historians, biographers, and researchers did begin to take a more unbiased look at him and JFK was revealed for the man was he really was. It’s not just that he was sex addict...he was....it was the sheer recklessness of his sexual escapades. Sharing a mistress with the Chicago mob boss while he was president. Sharing Marilyn Monroe with his brother. Sleeping with a woman with close Nazi ties during WWII. It was completely reckless and irresponsible. And the father....please don’t get me started on him...virtually a crime family boss in his own right.
Hopefully the truth about MLK Jr will also come out one day as well.

If Martin Luther King was alive today he would be as big a race baiting liberal as Jesse Jackson, Al and the rest. He was already headed that way when he was assasinated, having gotten involved with anti-Vietnam War movement and heartily endorsing the budget busting “Great Society” spending, that created the black dependency culture we have today. Yet, many conservatives seem to have deceived themselves into believing he was really a conservative, and by today’s standards he may have been conservative on a few issues just like JFK and many other democrats of that day were. Yet had he lived, he would have “evolved” into the pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, pro-socialist liberal just like the rest of the democrats of that era did.
