Among the civil rights activists who attended Wednesdays commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington were members of PETA, who said the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.s dream of equality extends to our furry friends.
A few volunteers for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals attended the ceremonies wearing shirts advocating for vegans rights. They declined to talk to a reporter, referring questions to their headquarters, where Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo said the group was invited to participate by the events organizers and wanted to show that equal rights should extend not just to all people, but to all creatures.
We saw this as wonderful opportunity to show the need for breaking down the barrier that prevents us from caring about all the others who are not like us, regardless of race, regardless of gender and regardless of species, Ms. Guillermo wrote in an email.
