A military jury sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death Wednesday for killing 13 people during the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood.
Hasan, who sat motionless as the jury president read the verdict, has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, never denied being the gunman. In opening statements, he acknowledged to the jury that he pulled the trigger in a crowded waiting room where troops were getting final medical checkups before deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hasan had one final chance Wednesday to give a closing argument before his case went to the jury, but he declined -- continuing an absent defense that he has used since his trial began three weeks ago.
The Army psychiatrist's behavior has only stoked suspicion that his ultimate goal is martyrdom, in the form of a death sentence that would allow him to fulfill what prosecutors have described as a "jihad duty" under his Islamic faith.
The lead prosecutor, Col. Mike Mulligan, told jurors Wednesday morning that history was full of instances of death in the name of religion. But he said it would be "wrong and unsupportive" to tie Hasan's actions to a wider cause

Private Hasan will have to shave off his beard in Leavenworth. What a shame.
Hey, the only reason he was sentenced to death was because he was black.
Hey, you know it will be said.
Thanks Doogle.
I knew a lot of TX NG artillery men who would love to take a “shot” at that a hole and turn him into monkey grease.
That question is above my pay grade, but he could vacate the death sentence for "humanitarian reasons." I'm guessing, but I wouldn't put it past him, seeing how he likes to inflict pain of Americans.
Can I be the one to pull the trigger??
If obama’s signature is required before executing this wretch, I suggest they tell him they’re just demoting Hassan to “corpse man.”
There, fixed it.
Correct. But it can't change the jury's finding, only the punishment. And, I believe I heard one of the talking heads say that the military has only three death row inmates and that the military hasn't executed anyone since 1961. If that's the case, he'll die a natural death in Kansas.
It may have been the strategy of the Obama Administration to prolong the period before a trail in order that he might have died from nature causes resulting from his deteriorated physical condition.
Oh, and the woman who shot him at long range with a single shot fired from her pistol was let go from the service and is unemployed... Somehow this is not about the Army taking care of its own as has always been in the past - she is a hero but somehow in Obama's military she is let go.P>Did the MSM ever publish that Major Hasen shot his new medial admin assistant the first day of this young man's military career after his entry level training? This is one heck of a way to meet your first boss in the Army, e.g., to be shot by him as he began his deliberate massacre on the psych ward.
The only reason Major Hasen was shot outside was because he had ran out of ammunition and was going to his car for more ammo to finish what he had started. The woman who fired the shot told him to halt but he continued with two pistols so she fired that one shot that
I thought Private Hasan was in the Army, not the navy?
I was being facetious. Obama once referred to a corpsman as “corpse man.”
Now, execute him.
I thought she was not military but employed by her off base locale who was contracted to provide policing for the base?
Hopefully he will suffer.
Correct, but to let that particular employee shows that there is not value placed on those who perform outstanding duty. There was a time when an employee like her would have been the last to go.
