The aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to be sent to Syrian coast?
Challenge ^ | 27-08-2013

EXCLUSIVE The aircraft carrier, which is emerging from a long technical stop in Toulon, should reach U.S. ships already off Syria. The Staff of the Armed Forces denied this.

According to a source close to the defense minister, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will soon reach the "Mediterranean theater somewhere between Cyprus and Syria." The same source indicates that "the decision was made, even if it is not official yet." The nuclear aircraft carrier, the flagship of the Navy, is operational again after a refurbishment carried out during a technical stop for several months at the shipyard DCNS Toulon.

"It is presently docked and received no order," says Colonel Gilles Jarron, spokesman of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces who denies that such a decision has been taken.

According to our information, the mission of the aircraft carrier in what could become a theater of operations, will be in collaboration with the U.S. Navy, which has already placed an additional destroyer in the Mediterranean. A total of four ships of the U.S. Navy equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles will be present.

You would think that publicizing your military plans to the enemy could cause some problems. It’s as if Obama wants the Syrian mission to fail so he could declare himself a dictator.

Isn’t the de Gaulle the one that shook itself apart when the wash was being done?

Obama is playing poker. He's got nothing in his hand -- his high card is a six. And he just keeps throwing money into the pot, looking around the table, telling everyone, "Don't call my bluff!"

I wonder how this will work out?

I am a firm believer that a modern Navy can project force. I am also a firm believer that one of these days somebody will destroy a billion dollar ship with a 20 million dollar anti-ship missile barrage.

It seems inevitable and it will change the world when it happens. Technology can only do so much and the cheap missile technology seems to improve faster than the defensive technologies for fleet defense.

The real question - will Assad quietly sit back and take a few losses for Western powers to save face or will he go all out to defend his regime? Right now, I would guess he is calculating that it will be better to hide his assets and accept a few little losses so he can get back to winning his war.

We should stay out of this and it sickens me that we are pretty much allied with AQ on this one.

As I recall, De Gaulle had a bad propulsion system that was prone to vibration.
When the laundry was in operation at the same time, a resonant frequency built up that literally shook it apart.

Even with 27 reverse gears De Gaulle is/or was a dog.

I imagine they will stay way back from Syria.

The hit will be in Lebanon, and French peacekeepers are already sleeping it off there. Thanks JerseyanExile.
