Americans are told we need to have a national conversation in which we talk about race.
And yet, when we have horrific crimes with white victims where the alleged perpetrators are African-American or Latino, we're told that we can't talk about race.
This isn't true when the roles are reversed. If the victims are African-American or Latino, and the alleged perpetrator is white, we talk about race until our throats go dry.
Confused? Join the club.
If Americans don't understand it, how are we to explain any of this to the grieving family of Christopher Lane, a 22-year-old college baseball player from Melborne, Australia, who was recently gunned down while jogging in a neighborhood a world away -- Duncan, Oklahoma?
According to police, the evidence suggests that the shooting was not premeditated and random. It could have been part of a gang initiation, according to a theory floated by the father of a boy who the three teenagers allegedly tried to recruit.
But here's the headline: Prosecutors say that the killing was not about race, despite the fact that one alleged assailant left a long cyber trail on social media where he talked about hating "woods" (derogatory slang for white people) and glorified guns and violence.
"At this point, the evidence does not support the theory that Christopher Lane was targeted based upon his race or nationality," said District Attorney Jason Hicks.
As ghoulish as it sounds, it may be that the three teenagers responsible for the shooting -- 15-year-old James Edwards and 16-year-old Chancey Luna, who have been charged with first-degree murder, and 17-year-old Michael Long, who has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder for driving the car -- were simply bored and decided to kill someone. I’ll agree with you. I do have black friends who are very dear to me.
People of any race-ethnicity-whatever can be good people living productive lives.
The emphasis was meant to be on “good people”...I sure didn’t say it very well.
That “conversation” has been ongoing and vociferous. The “liberal” view of a conversation, however, is to lecture a an audience that is not permitted to respond and is tied into their seats. Their call for a “conversation” is a demand that conservatives and other gun rights advocates shut up and comply while the liberals rant.
We’ve had that talk before and it appears they didn’t listen.

I have zero guilt about slavery as well. My family, like that of many Caucasians, did not even ARRIVE in this country until the 20th century, and then to the Northeast. They worked the crap jobs immigrants usually do, and each succeeding generation did a little bit better - though I am not sure that will be true for my children and their children. I am tired of racists acting like every white person is the direct descendent of an evil plantation owner and born with a silver spoon in his mouth. My son has said as much when asked if he doesn’t feel guilty for 400 years of slavery. He responds as I have written, that he had nothing to do with it, and suddenly the accuser, shocked, goes silent like the cat has his tongue. The racists are used to cowing people and are unprepared for push-back.
If by chance you see a gang of African American youths heading in your (or your families) direction, looking like they're angry about something be sure you tell tell them that....although I would feel better about your chances of good communication if you also had a loaded rifle in your hands.
Ten years ago or so, some white California high-school kids went public with some pretty frank admissions about harboring ethnic animus against blacks and Mexicans. They were blunt: their odium and animus arose from being around them and being abused, cursed, beaten, etc., without recourse of any kind -- being punching bags. And these were kids who'd been brought up to be good little NEA liberals.

OK, here’s my contribution to this so-called discussion on race: By and large, the negro race has been an enormous disappointment to those of us who took their side in the 60s. ( I was an idealistic liberal -— racewise-— then)
Money was taken from my pocket and given to negroes, in the hopes that they would, in turn, become productive members of society. They were given food, shelter, education, job-preferences -— everything. They were given a handout, a hand up, and everything in between.
What’s the result? Absolute proof of the old saying that, if you demand nothing, you get exactly what you asked for.
Throw away the outliers, and the negro race in America now consists of druggies, illiterate and violence-prone gang bangers, and fat, sloppy welfare queens with six kids by five different impregnators, none of whom have been seen for years.
You want respect, Black America? Finish high school. Get a job -—ANY job. Don’t make any babies until you’ve gotten married.
Oh, and by the way, I don’t OWE you the sweat off my left testicle. Make it on your own.

And being from the “wild west” area of upstate NY (pretty wild at the time!), he wore a blue uniform.
They believe they “deserve” it. When in fact they deserve nothing more than you or I.
They complain about how whitey keeps them down and cusses him behind his back and calls him selfish. Tax the rich they say, they don’t need it, they have enough.
They only words I would like to hear is a simple “Thank You” not F**k You.

You know what, let’s not, it’s pretty much all been said. Screw race, I don’t give a damn about race. Blood is red and money is green, those are the only colors of any importance.
