Elmore Leonard, the prolific crime novelist whose louche characters, deadpan dialogue and immaculate prose style in novels like Get Shorty, Freaky Deaky, Glitz and La Brava secured his status as a modern master of American genre writing, died Tuesday at his home in Bloomfield Township, Mich. He was 87.
His death was announced on his Web site.
To his admiring peers,Mr. Leonard did not merely validate the popular crime thriller; he stripped the form of its worn-out affectations, reinventing it for a new generation and elevating it to a higher literary shelf.

“Justified” is Elmore Leonard’s work come to life.
Mr. Leonard and my father were classmates at U of D high many years ago. May they both rest in peace.
It is incredible how much this man wrote. His name shows up in TV show and movie credits constantly. Old and new.
Just saw “Jackie Brown” again.
For some reason, I never read a lot of his books. But I did enjoy “Get Shorty.”
Mr Majestyk (Charles Bronson) and 52 Pickup (Roy Scheider) stand out as some of the better movie adaptations. But Justified is just excellent.
One of my favorites. Gonna miss him.
That’s probably my favorite of his, great book for anybody that’s into metafiction, it’s really fun to watch the book “self correct”, every time the movie producer lacks something that something gets woven into the story. Outside the meta portions it’s a typically excellent Leonard story.
My three favorite authors are dead: Elmore Leonard, Vince Flynn, and Michael Crichton.
I was at a writers conference (Santa Barbara) where he was a speaker. When asked how he handled requests for movie rights, he said, “I just get a million dollars and leave the set.”
RIP to a very clever and witty scribe.
RIP.
RIP.
Justified is a great show.
“Out of Sight”: The best thing “J-Lo” ever did; only thing I watch with her in it. The recently departed Dennis Farina was excellent in it as her dad.
“Jackie Brown”: Adaptation of “Rum Punch”. One of my favorite movies of all time. Best thing Tarantino ever did, although “Inglourious Basterds” is damn good too.
