A Tennessee elementary school banned students from eating ham sandwiches, BLTs and anything else made with pork, but eventually lifted the ban after parents complained.
Third grade teachers at Sunset Elementary School in Brentwood, Tenn. sent home an Approved Snack List for the school year and it specifically banned anything that comes from a pig.snacklist
No meats containing pork, read the memorandum. Starting Monday, August 12, 2013 your child must provide their own snack from the above approved snack list.
Kids could nosh on raw vegetables without dips or sauces, fresh fruit, crackers, pretzels, and popcorn but no ribs or pork rinds.
Only choose a food from the following list to bring into school for snack, the memorandum stated in bold-face type. No other food items are permitted.

Hey! Slim Jims are diet food! Says so right in the name: "Slim"
The minute I saw this list, I recognized the brands as being, at least most of them (I'd have to check the packages of the brands I don't use) kosher. That clued me in immediately to the fact that they were catering to MUSLIMS in their school. They would never bother to do so for just Jews.
Well, according to “Justice” John Rob-em, the State can make you buy whatever product it chooses.
technical question: Why is it that when I copy/paste a link from another site into an FR post, it doesn’t transfer as a link but just as a regular typed statement? I don’t have this problem copy/pasting links into emails.
Yes, schools do have agreements with marketers to specify brands.
that is total bull..
no one will dictate to me like that..I’m so thankful I have no kids, nor grand kids in today’s public school system..never heard such ridiculous ideas..
how is it possible they can tell you what BRAND NAME you may have???
and our tax dollars support the school systems???
WAKE UP AMERICANS...VOTE THEM OUT..ALL OF THEM...PRAY FOR AMERICA.
Yep.
I had a co-worker who was deathly allergic to peanuts. I sat two offices down from him, and was eating a PB&J for lunch. He stopped by my office on his way out the door, and was obviously in quite a bit of respiratory distress. He quickly explained the situation, and I never brought PB&J into that workplace again. No problem.
However - if I was THAT desperately allergic to things (like your relative with the shellfish allergy), I'd not eat out. Not worth risking my life over.
I get a feeling that some of it is "Hey, lookit me" -ism. I've got a co-worker like that. She's "Got a Gluten allergy", yet she has no fear of hitting the cookie / donut tray at work .... but in a restaurant, she'll quiz the poor waiter about every ingredient that might or might not be in the kitchen.
And you're right. Pork Allergy? Neeeever heard of it.
The MB in Egypt is chanting they’re fighting for Islam. We may not be at war with Islam. But Islamists are sure at war with us.
The software used on FR looks for and detects html in you typing.
If you use ANY html in your typing, the software tries to display the post using proper, classic, correct html.
I looked back at one of your previous attempts to post a link.
You used html style line breaks in part of your message,
and then you entered the text of a web link.
Proper, classic, correct use of html does not allow for just pasting the text of the link; it has to be formatted correctly.
So your solution is to do one of these two things:
...use NO html at all; OR use html correctly.
Check the brands to see of they are halal. halal isn’t only meat. And some of the store brands are made with other than.
Hang on folks. This occurred in the Williamson county school district. The letter was sent home with students. One parent forwarded this letter to our fine morning talk show host. -Ralph Bristol. ( www.ralphbristol.com). He spoke about it at great length I believe it was this past Monday or Tuesday morning. By the end of the day the school sent out an announcement retracting all the info in this letter. They stated something to the effect that it was only one teacher that did this, it was not meant to be mandatory just a recommendation. Major retraction. In my estimation, this backtrack and retraction was entirely due to our fine morning talk show guy and his super audience ( 99.7 WTN). :)
Parents forget that they rule the schools. The school wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for their tax dollars. They pay the principal’s and superentendant’s salaries. They are the ones who have the power to vote in and vote out board members. I would find out who wrote the list and make sure he/she gets shown the door. If parents across the country would start standing up and taking back their power, this sort of bs wouldn’t happen.
Thats what it sounds like to me. One idiotic teacher putting out a memo to her class.
I'd send what I darned well pleased with my kid, and go with him on day 1 to make sure the teacher and principal knew they'd BETTER not give my kid any grief over it.
Here is the schools response to complaints regarding this letter. This is from the Williamson County Schools facebook page.
Attention elementary school parents, we have an important message to pass along.
Many of you may have recently received information addressing food allergies and approved snack lists. This is an issue we take very seriously as we have many students who have life threatening food allergies.
However, if you received a list of approved or mandated choices, please disregard. Schools should only be offering suggested snack choices, and that information will be sent home only if your child is in a classroom where there is a food allergy.
Any reference to not allowing pork products in school is incorrect. Please disregard.
Thank you as always for your support of Williamson County Schools.
MANY students with food allergies? How many is many?
Maybe they should not have snacks or food at school.
Back in my day, no one I ever knew was allergic to peanuts. Don’t get me wrong, everyone is probably allergic to something but why are there so many kids who have suddenly become allergic to peanuts. When I was in school, the gov gave schools peanut butter by the truckload. Every lunch tray, every day had a big homemade pb cookie, a dixie cup of pb and honey for our fresh homemade rolls, a blob of pb for our apples, a half a pb sandwich, etc. Every day and no one died. There was peanuts in every household because lots of kids had family own farms that grew peanuts so there was peanut dust on everyone during harvest time. And still, no one died. Our teenage/college age kids grew peanuts in little plastic cups as a preschool (private school) project and no one died. That wasn’t that long ago, so what caused this sudden outbreak of allergies?
“...but pork is so versatile....”
Don’t forget how well pork also goes with
Chinese food
Korean food
Hawaiian food
Philippines food
Vietnamese food
Best of all, pork goes best with
Anythingbuthalal food!!
I've found that the link displays as a proper active one if there is nothing else in my post. If I insert a link along with text, it posts as non-active. The HTML sandbox can probably help us both.
