The folks from Elio Motors dropped by the Philadelphia Business Journal offices in Old City on Monday to show off their new concept car (see attached photo gallery). Small in stature and containing three wheels (two in the front, one in the back), the car costs just $6,800 and gets 87 mpg highway (49 mpg city).
Although still in the concept and fundraising stages, Elios top brass has been showing off the vehicle across the country from its headquarters in Shreveport, La. to New York to Detroit. For the first time, they revealed a prototype of the cars engine, which has not yet been seen by any other news organization (see photos.)
The company plans to eventually have showrooms and dealerships across Philadelphia and all of the top 60 markets in the United States.
But starting a car company from scratch is no easy grind....

If so, would that mean shifting on mountain highways? Is there some sort of vehicle that doesn't downshift going up mountain highways? Maybe "mountain" means something different to you.

Is there some sort of vehicle that doesn't downshift going up mountain highways? Maybe "mountain" means something different to you. I'm taking 4 lane plus highway with a speed limit at or over 55 with a 5% grade. I'm wondering if the overdrive suggested would be able to handle that with such a small engine.

I actually got to sit in their prototype car when it was in Dallas last month. The car has plenty of room even for me 6’4” 250. Car comes standard with ac. The roll cage seems to be well designed. I just wonder how they will hit the price point. If they can actually build it for 6800 I could see Buying one.
To: sr4402
I doubt it, but then neither can many passenger cars today. It wouldn’t make it unique.

I just wonder how they will hit the price point Yes an excellent point. How much motorcycle can you buy for that price? And this buggy has a whole lot more in content.

My brothers girlfriend had an Isetta.
It was a bit weird being so close to the front of the car.
The steering column was attach to the door.
If you think the Smarcar is scary, you aint been for a ride in an Isetta!
Im glad she never ran into anything. Isettas originally sold for under $1,000.
A nice Isetta today can sell for $25,000 to $50,000.

We were thinking of getting one to just run around in. Keeping the Dodge 2500 as well.

I imagine this thing with tread marks on the roof and a lower profile. Elio Overall Height: 54.2″
Just the right shape and height to fit under an 18 wheeler.

Ill take the convertible limo for $25k! With that fold back sunroof it would be pretty neat with a .50 ca. machine gun mounted on the roof.

If you were going down the road and fired a burst, the Isetta would probably stop and then go backward.

“So where is the 84 MPG coming from?”
Does seem a bit optimistic given that a motorcycle with the same size engine falls a bit short of that.
