The folks from Elio Motors dropped by the Philadelphia Business Journal offices in Old City on Monday to show off their new concept car (see attached photo gallery). Small in stature and containing three wheels (two in the front, one in the back), the car costs just $6,800 and gets 87 mpg highway (49 mpg city).
Although still in the concept and fundraising stages, Elios top brass has been showing off the vehicle across the country from its headquarters in Shreveport, La. to New York to Detroit. For the first time, they revealed a prototype of the cars engine, which has not yet been seen by any other news organization (see photos.)
The company plans to eventually have showrooms and dealerships across Philadelphia and all of the top 60 markets in the United States.
But starting a car company from scratch is no easy grind....

I like it - I wouldn’t mind having one of these for around town.

I’m pretty jazzed for this. It’s inexpensive enough to have one for the daily commute and still have a bigger vehicle for when you need one.

$6,800!
There be a fishy smell about this thing.

Better get two, one for each foot, and a skate lock key.

I’m thinking the same thing. It would make parking a lot easier.

I imagine this thing with tread marks on the roof and a lower profile.

Yet another three-wheeled “car” with a motorcycle type engine.
This isn’t some technological breakthrough, just a redesign of the outer shell of an old concept.
What would be revolutionary is 87 mpg, seats four comfortably and has exceptional range.
Anything less is just a marketing gimmick.

From the Elio website:
An inline, 3 cylinder, 1 liter, 70 HP, fuel-injected, SOHC gas-powered, liquid-cooled, automotive engine. So where is the 84 MPG coming from?
