Yep, that explains the videotaped flash before the crash, and why the engine and transmission were distant from the rest of the debris, but it doesn’t explain the sudden increase in altitude...

Turning off the ignition could cause steering wheel to lock, resulting in a car you can't steer. Putting car into neutral is best option, or if to turn key off be sure to turn key back on a notch or two to override steering wheel lock.
