The editor of the New York newspaper that created a furor by publishing the names and addresses of gun-permit owners suddenly is out of a job.
According to the Rockland Times, a competitor to the Gannett-owned Rockland County Journal News, editor Caryn McBride is among the casualties of a recent purge at the Journal News.
The report said 17 journalists were among a total of 26 staff members at the Journal News who were let go.
It was the Journal News that in 2012 published the names and addresses of all gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties under the headline Where are the gun permits in your neighborhood?
The Times said police reports showed McBride had called the Clarkstown Police Department to notify them of a flood of angry phone calls and letters the newspaper received after it published the map.
The Rockland editor said she felt threatened by the complaints, but local police didnt believe there was a credible threat. McBride and other executives then decided to hire armed guards to protect their property, the Times reported, causing an uproar due to the perceived hypocrisy of the avowed anti-gun editors hiring gun-toting men.
The layoffs were announced by the newspapers CEO, Janet Hasson.
The fallout from the decision to publish the names and addresses of gun-permit holders continued for weeks.
Two months ago, the White Plains-based newspaper admitted that the information it published was badly outdated. The paper acknowledged many people had a dot on their house, indicating there was a gun permit at that address, even though they didnt own a gun.

Little consolation ... the damage has been done.
I just love it when a Liberal/Marxist “offs” herself! In this case, payback was not a bitch, but to a bitch!
Just now? They probably forgot what they did to get fired.
Anybody have HER home address ?
For any out of work lawyers out there looking for a slam-dunk class action lawsuit, here’s one on a silver platter. Fifty grand per plaintiff, you name your cut, and get your own newspaper to boot.
“Perceived” hypocrisy? Caryn, I’ve got some bad news for you. It wasn’t just in the eye of the beholder.
Now she’s fired and others, also. Good to hear.
Hey, McBride was it worth it? You should give a public apology and include how you were comforted with ‘your armed’ protection. I don’t think you will need them though on the unemployment line.
According to the article burglars entered a home listed in the article and tried to break into the gun safe which was badly damaged. This happened shortly after the article was published.
Possible lawsuit in the works.....
“liberalism” is really totalitarian fascism. There is nothing liberal about it.
‘Guess she can work for obama as one of his press secretaries now.
Eight months!?!? It took eight months before heads started rolling over this??
The Left should be made to feel the aftershocks all the way up to Gannett's HQ!
Ain't nothin' "perceived" about it.
If you read the whole article....they laid off over sixty percent of the staff. The hint here, which they won’t admit....they lost a massive subscription base, and some advertisers likely left. The paper is marginally able to survive at this point, and likely relies upon other regional papers to provide text for their paper.
The question....was it worth it? You can look back now, and determine that they really screwed up their asset, and had no respect for their business or their customer base. These are the kind of people who shouldn’t be in the newspaper business.
As for surviving through the future? I wouldn’t give them too great of odds, and suspect they will wrap up the paper within two years.
I saw John Lott recently on CSpan allege that when these types of records are published, there is an INCREASE of burglaries of homes NOT listed.
Form the way he made that statement, I expect he is on his way to publishing data supporting the assertion.
Not disagreeing with your story, just saying that John Lott thinks that generally it works just the other way.

Thank you, pepsionice, for the business perspective. Blind hatred never sees very far ahead, and that's no way to run a business.
Those people belong in the overt propaganda line of work, not local "news" papers, which still have profit and loss statements to deliver.
Kudos Old Sarge, keep up the good work and thanks!
Atta boy, Sarge!
Slow as molasses to react, but far faster than the federal government
Anybody have HER home address ?
When you get it send to me as I have a farm manure file that I need to get rid of.
