Satellite images show destruction of Aleppo

Gripped by more than a year of conflict the thriving commercial hub has been transformed into a series of battlefields and front lines, its residents struggling to live on amid the widespread disease, dirty water and crippling food shortages.

The aerial pictures show the extent of the destruction of the city, one of the oldest and most historically rich in the world. The Ancient City of Aleppo is a Unesco World Heritage site, this year placed on the UN organisation's list of World Heritage in Danger.

“Aleppo has been utterly devastated, its people fleeing the conflagration in huge numbers," said Amnesty International's Senior Crisis Response Adviser Donatella Rovera.

In a statement, the rights group said the images showed "alarming trends in how the conflict is being fought: with utter disregard for the rules of International Humanitarian Law, causing extensive destruction, death, and displacement”.

I don’t like seeing ancient cities destroyed. It robs everyone of a rich exposure to history.

Here two factions of Islam, are content to destroy some of their most sacred artifacts.

And then they belch about some small infraction that Israel has supposedly made. It’s just nuts.

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown , and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.” Isaiah 27:13

I'm not even a follower of Islam, and this saddens me.
What a waste...

Doesn’t look that bad.

The people who own that billboard in #2 must be pleased that it is still standing.

BTW folks, please take note of the minaret that was taken out in the back of these comparative photo.

The minaret was built over 1000 years ago.

I say “Drop your bombs between the minarets.”

Lots of them.

The before pictures were taken when the sun was lower. Shadowing highlights which buildings are standing.

The lighting in the after pics make it look worse than perhaps it really is. Some buildings are obviously destroyed. Most, it is not possible to say for sure.

Here's a little better comparative picture of before and after.

The minaret was over 1000 years old.

Not enough reference points to even tell if the minaret would show in the second picture. It’s probably the same corner, but again, it could be looking the other direction.

I don’t trust Islamic militants, even when they have US backing.

This is what Syria wanted to do to Israel; and
they spent 60 years trying to do.

Now they are getting destroyed because a ruthless dictator
and Islam are fighting.

(Hint: it’s not Israel which is handing them payback; Israel has nothing to do with it.)

Thank you. I often need help.

Time was, were were enemies of Russia. Today we have reasonably good relations.

I would have hated to see the Kremlin destroyed.

We can to see it. Enjoy the rich historical aspect of the place.

We know a lot of very rotten things took place there, but we can see what the more important structures were, that have lasted for 100s of years.

I hate seeing thousand year old structured destroyed.

We got upset when the Arabs destroyed those Buddhist carvings in Iraq. It’s just such a waste.

I found these, so it’s not like someone else is making a claim here. It there’s a mistake, it would be my fault.
