Satellite images show destruction of Aleppo

Gripped by more than a year of conflict the thriving commercial hub has been transformed into a series of battlefields and front lines, its residents struggling to live on amid the widespread disease, dirty water and crippling food shortages.

The aerial pictures show the extent of the destruction of the city, one of the oldest and most historically rich in the world. The Ancient City of Aleppo is a Unesco World Heritage site, this year placed on the UN organisation's list of World Heritage in Danger.

“Aleppo has been utterly devastated, its people fleeing the conflagration in huge numbers," said Amnesty International's Senior Crisis Response Adviser Donatella Rovera.

In a statement, the rights group said the images showed "alarming trends in how the conflict is being fought: with utter disregard for the rules of International Humanitarian Law, causing extensive destruction, death, and displacement”.

IN AMERICA WE HAD SHERMAN’S MARCH TO THE SEA.

But that didn’t matter, because it was our own civil war and not the business of any other country. In Syria, on the other hand ...

Oh ... wait .... that’s also a civil war.

Nevermind.

I realize all that. I’m not sure if you thought I was inferring Israel was involved, because it was clear to me who the two factions were.

Due to the terrorism conducted in the name of Allah, that’s pretty much what we have to go by isn’t it. None the less, parts of this Mosque did survive over a thousand years. That’s a fairly long time.

How much of this current strife is legitimate Syrian driven opposition, and how much is outside driven, I don’t know.

If this is the natural rising up of Syrians against Syrians for the most part, I think they have legitimate grounds for it. I would hope the Syrians make up any new leadership.

I would hate to think Al Qaeda would hijack the nation in self-interest. I don’t know if that’s a possibility or not.

If it is, NOT GOOD.

You know what would fix this? More fighting and killing by all factions.

Thanks Straight Vermonter.

Here two factions of Islam, are content to destroy some of their most sacred artifacts. And then they belch about some small infraction that Israel has supposedly made. It’s just nuts.

Just like our black-on-black crime is not important for black "leaders" but they will jump all over Zim or some white who uses the magic "N" word.

Group identity is stronger than anything. That is why our "progressives" are trying to destroy our national group identity.

Yes, I note one photo was of a ballistic missile strike also. Journalism schools must take everyone else’s flunkies.

Sandbags in the mosque too. Israel should remove Al-Aqsa and just point at Allepo as a precedent.

History is a process, not an event.

Aleppo lies on the main road, the trade route. The city’s heritage includes destruction and rebuilding countless times. The current struggle with death will certainly result in rebirth. Some of the very old will survive and still be revered. Perhaps the battle scarred Great Mosque will also
survive to be remembered and revered for pulling through

I don’t like seeing ancient cities destroyed. It robs everyone of a rich exposure to history.

I hear you.

But when it's just Islamic crap that gets blown up then I am cool with that.

We should however preserve the ruins so that in later years we can point at them and laugh.

The day will come when our own cities are in ruin. Many of them already are, think Detroit.

The reason these places are being bombed is because that is were the combatants are hiding. Same way in Iraq. Moslem's like to hide behind woman and children then complain about the civilian deaths.

Beyond the usual, if something has been built and it has been around for 1000 years, that interests me.  For something to last for 1000 years, it had to have something going for it from the start.

That's interesting to me.
