"Why would Al Qaeda target the most Islamist-sympathetic city in all of America?" My guess is because they are easily penetrated and by nature of their politics, like Boston, they are less able to sense clear and present danger such as the Marathon Bombers.

Why would Al Qaeda target the most Islamist-sympathetic city in all of America?Blue states have a global reputation for weakness. Thus, AQ views them as easy targets. Notice how AQ attacks cities mainly in blue states, most notably during 9/11 and the Boston bombings.
