Video shows vicious Pinellas school bus attack

Gulfport, Florida police released video of a horrible racial beating on a school bus. A white student is seen brutally beaten by three older black teens as he stood up to leave the bus.

The boy suffered two black eyes, bruising and a broken hand. WFLA reported, via Free Republic:

Gulfport police recently released surveillance video from a school bus that shows the bus driver’s perspective of a beating earlier this month.

In the video from July 9th, the victim is sitting in the second seat of the Pinellas school bus with his head down. The violence starts as soon as he stands-up to get off the bus.

The bus driver, John Moody can be heard yelling for somebody to try to stop them and calls dispatch for help, “I got a fight. I need help in a hurry, I got a fight I need help in a hurry.”

The punches and kicks continue, and the victim falls between the seats. At one point you can hear his screams on the video. The bus driver yells at the attackers, “leave that boy alone,” but doesn’t try to intervene physically.

Then he again calls dispatch to verify the address. “Get somebody out here quick, quick quick they’re about to beat this boy to death. There’s nothing I can do…please send somebody,” said Moody.

According to Pinellas school bus driver policy the driver’s first duty is to call dispatch, and only has to step in if they think it’s safe. They’re not required to intervene.

Looks like a hate crime to me.

When I was ten years old I came within seconds of this type of beating from a group of unknown black kids at my bus stop. Luckily for me, my 5’10” mother was waiting to pick me up. As soon as I stepped out of the bus they formed a circle around me but my mom came running.

Long story short, my mom stepped in where the male bus driver took notes and made observations.

BTW, the bus driver sounds black.

Honestly I don't know what the bus driver COULD do in this situation. It was over in about 20 seconds.

We knew she’d swing it whenever necessary.

I attended school in Jacksonville, Florida where our bus driver was the owner/operator contracted with the district to drive her own bus. Because she was the owner, she could decide who did and did not get to ride on her bus. Screw around enough and she would kick you off. Once kicked off you were responsible for getting yourself to school, usually causing your parents to have to drive you. She also organized trips to the lake and the roller rink on weekends and during the summer. If you were kicked off of her bus you missed out on those trips. Because she had the power she had, this type of crap didn’t happen on her bus.

The Justice Department is investigating whether a civil rights prosecution should be commenced against the white student for inciting the attack.

Curious that they don’t give the ages of the ‘teens’, who look to be about 13. The bus driver appears to be as big as the three combined, and yet you don’t hear him even telling the boys to stop. And the kid getting beat up is a sixth grader.

The racial angle, unfortunately, is that he and the perpetrators are black, the victim is white.

I’ve never heard of that model of school busing, but it sounds intriguing—such as the bus being put to much greater use than the usual.

I think it was a great model, it sure seemed to work well back then for both district and driver. This was in the 60s; I'm not sure if they still do it that way or if it would even work today. I think it's easy to imagine the scores of lawsuits that might result from a driver kicking a Trayvon type thug off of her bus. Cries of racism would abound. As for the additional use. The owner/drivers had bus payments to make even through summer so putting their bus to use during those months worked well. It also allowed us to get to the lake and other locations w/o having to ask our parents to drive us. Here is where we would go. You could get a bus ride there, stay all day, and a ride back home in the afternoon for $5. The bus would usually be filled to capacity.

Let’s say an 70-year-old CCWer had been on that bus. Obviously, he could not have personally intervened, physically taking on the punks. He’s just too old. Would he have been justified taking out a gun and blasting the punks to Kingdom Come? I tend to think he would. The reason I ask is because I live in a state where we are not allowed CCW and so I haven’t been to all the classes you guys in other states have to go through.
