(CNN) – Their home has its own bowling alley, movie theatre, and chef.
But while living in the White House could leave Sasha and Malia Obama with a distorted sense of how Americans live, their father says he's always conveying to his daughters how abnormal their situation really is.
"We are constantly reminding Malia and Sasha of the slightly unreal environment that they're in, and that that's not the norm and they shouldn't expect to be the norm," President Barack Obama said in an interview for the Amazon Kindle store.
Having relatives who don't live like the commander-in-chief – and even struggle to get by – has kept his children grounded, Obama said.
"One of the advantages we have is that we still have family members who are not only middle class, but we've got some family members who are poor," he told Amazon editor David Blum. "Malia and Sasha have cousins who know what it's like to struggle and know what it's like to have to scrape by. They know that those kids are just as worthy as they are, they just haven't had as much luck."
Obama, who spoke at an Amazon.com distribution plant in Tennessee Tuesday, said that even kids who don't grow up in the White House have a distorted sense of wealth – a cultural shift, he said, from when he was young.

You know, Jackie Onassis was embarrassed to help her Bouvier relatives when the movie “Grey Gardens” came out. It is too bad no one can embarrass Obama to be a good man.
Barry does not like to redistribute his own wealth.
Oh, he is such a noble man. Look at how he teaches his children about the realities of the poor people, while they suffer in their prison of 100 million dollar vacations, once a month.
Poor children, that the white man made them suffer under the yoke of royalty. But the black man is going to keep them balanced and in harmony with humanism.

Obama says we are ALL his brother’s keeper which is why he doesn’t bother to do jack squat for his own half-brother (who lives in a shack). Best to spread YOUR wealth around to help the poor peoples of the world.

I married into a family of heavy smokers from RI. My mother-in-law smoked and drank through all her pregnancies. My hubs struggles daily with the addiction. So sad!
So does that mean Malia and Sasha will be opting to work everyday in a soup kitchen or homeless shelter while their parents are off vacationing on Martha's Vinyard?

We know that Barry can't find it in his heart to open his wallet to help his own kin, but I've often wondered whether he shares any of the royalties from his two books with the man who actually wrote them.
I'm guessing that he doesn't, which explains Bill Ayers' repeated statements alleging he authored them.

Very true, but don't buy what Obama's saying for a minute. He doesn't tell his kids anything of the sort.
It's true. I think my liberal family members hold that more against me than they do my conservative politics.
