SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Federal aviation officials have advised all foreign airlines to use a GPS system instead of visual reckoning and cockpit instruments when landing at San Francisco International Airport in the wake of the deadly Asiana Airlines crash.

If you are not trained to make visual approaches, I'll bet there's a lot of prayers being said in the cockpit during approach.

Apparently there are a bunch of foreign commercial pilots out there that can’t actually fly an airplane.

The FAA said all foreign carriers should continue to use alternate instrument approaches until the glide slopes return to service in late August. Wait. Was this because Obama shut down the air traffic controllers as part of the sequester?
If so, we're missing a big story here.

I’m old enough to remember the Japan Airlines DC-8 that landed in the water at San Francisco in 1968. The plane landed 2.5 mile short of the runway in the shallow waters of San Francisco Bay. All 107 people aboard were safely evacuated off the plane. The aircraft was recovered 55 hours after the accident, repaired and eventually flew back home to Japan and was in service for many decades.

Oh no we forgot to download new map software from Tom Tom.

In ‘68 I was touring in Nam. The skipper never mentioned anything about swimmers in the San Francisco Bay.

In 1969 they had a Seaboard World Airlines coming into DaNang. Unfortunately, the pilot flew past DaNang AFB and landed at Marble Mountain USMC Air Facility.
DaNang has two 10,000 ft long runways.
Marble Mountain had one 5,000 (listed length - some say it was just over 3300 ft long runway)
The airline pilot managed to get the DC-8 stopped before the end of the runway, and just prior to his being fired.
Here’s a great home movie of the takeoff.

GPS is not a magic solution to their problem. One must know how to and be proficient in “loading” or “building” the approach into the Flight Management Computer so that the autoflight systems, auto pilot, flight director, and autothrottles, can be engaged to fly the desired VISUAL APPROACH! Good pilots maintain their proficiency by hand flying approaches as often as they can. Professionals use the autoflight systems as a backup, not as primary.
The safety tip for all is to avoid flying airlines from developing nations, third world, etc.

Forgot what an event it was to have stewardesses land at your airbase. They did at Chu Lai a few times, never got close to them though.
That DC-8 had his water injection working at 120% to get off that runway.

would some smart pilot out there correct me,
I thought gps waas not allowed as primary nav sourse?
I use three in my plkane and wouldn’t fly without em.

as opposed to McDill afb?
they line up the same but are about 6 miles east west of each other
one is about 3 miles long and pete o’night is about as long as a football field.

Don’t know about the US, but Transport Canada approved GPS as primary means back in the early 2000s.
