It’s young Brahms, clean shaven, during his four-packs-a-day years. It’s well before he grew the full-face beard and switched to Havana cigars.

Sheer joyous fun! The other side of Brahms.

How about the other side of Claude Debussy?

That entire quartet is a blast and is one of the great crowd pleasers and warhorses of the chamber repertory. He knew he was writing a hit.

The ragtime sensation crossed the Great Pond. Debussy wrote this piano rag, and Brahms even had a ragtime project on the boards when liver cancer struck him down.

The scherzo to this Brahms trio is fun, and the middle section is a waltz where Jo sweeps you off your feet. You don't want it to end. It's just magical.

Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello in C, Op. 87, scherzo

It is definitely a “Crowd-pleaser”, but that does not diminish the integrity of the piece in any way. There is an unfortunate idea afloat in today’s “Art-World’ that seems to say that if a work is “Popular”, it is probably lacking in depth.

The unhappy result of this notion is that “artists” want to make their work more and more obtuse and unappealing, so as not to be “Popular” but to be “Deep”. LOL

At least, that is what the arts were pushing back when I was in Art College. Maybe things have changed now.

And, NO, I was not in college in the days of Brahms.

Even though I DO know the tune to “Gaudiamus Igitur”. hehehe
