McCain: Without Immigration Reform, GOP ‘Cannot Win a National Election'

WASHINGTON — Despite the Republican strategy of passing piecemeal immigration reform, Sen. John McCain predicted today that comprehensive legislation can pass the GOP-controlled House.

“I think this fall is very important,” McCain said at a forum hosted by AFL-CIO and the Economic Policy Institute.

“Let’s say we enact it, comprehensive immigration reform — I don’t think it gains a single Hispanic voter, but what it does, it puts us on a playing field where we can compete for the Hispanic voter,” McCain told PBS’ Gwen Ifill. “If we don’t do that, frankly, I don’t see — I see further polarization of the Hispanic voter and the demographics are clear that the Republican Party cannot win a national election. That’s just a fact.”

Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., agreed with McCain.

Does he really believe that elections pivot on weather or not we grant illegals citizenship? And why does he want to insult Hispanics by believing they are one issue voters, at least the ones who can vote legally. And one more thing, why focus on Hispanics, they are not the only ones in the U.S. illegally.

Explain this to me. So passing a bill targeting people who CANT and shouldn’t vote will some how SAVE the GOP? I’d understand if the GOP were actually passing a bill that pandered to Hispanics like funding bilingual education programs or making Cinco de Mayo a federal holiday. Instead they are pandering to people who can’t vote and most who if they could would not vote GOP.

There is a reason why the GOP is referred to the ‘stupid party’ and this is it.

True. I use to work with several 2nd and 3rd generation American hispanics that were enraged when our shop started bringing illegals in.

My friend Rafael was dead on target when he warned that we were all fixin to get screwed. Sure enough they increased the workforce by nearly 300% and put everybody on part time.

In the next shop I worked at I ended up working next to a Nicaraguan kid who told me that the US government brought his whole village to the USA on a military transport plane. He said they landed at Selfrige ANG base and put them on 4 busses to the Ann Arbor area.

So the important thing is competing, not actually winning. The Johnson Administration tried this concept in Vietnam; worked out real well.
