Now Homeschoolers, Private School Kids Have Right to Play on Public School Sports Teams (Ohio)

Homeschooled and private-school students across Ohio now have the right to play on sports teams and participate in other extracurricular activities thanks to a provision in the new state budget.

Previously, each local school board came up with its own policy on the issue.

Athletic and other extracurricular associations have their own rules about student participation in competitive or inter-scholastic activities. This provisions in the state budget override those rules.

Under the new provisions, public schools must allow private-school students to participate in an extracurricular activity only if their private schools do not offer the same activity.

And both homeschooled and private-school students must meet the same age and grade requirements as district students and pay the same fees, if any are required. The Ohio High School Athletic Association isn’t thrilled about the changes. The changes go against the principles that help sports contribute to positive “educational outcomes,” the association says:

Included among these desirable educational outcomes are the instilment [sic] of the notion of citizenship, loyalty and school spirit, the building of a cohesive student body, the promotion of amateurism by drawing athletes from the school’s population only which, in turn, discourages an overemphasis on sports, avoids “team shopping,” keeps in proper perspective the relationships among student-athletes and coaches and secures role models for other students.

The state budget also allows homeschooled students to fully participate in Ohio’s Post-Secondary Enrollment Options Program. The program allow students to enroll in college courses while in high school for both high-school and college credit. The state pays for the cost of the courses.

The program is already open to private-school students.

Maybe it's time to sever the link and make club sports the baseline. Schools could still have intramural sports as a part of the PE program, but perhaps they're not the place for highly competitive athletics.

Agreed! I've always believed that would be the best thing to do.

You could have just posted uncle obama's speech and saved the keystrokes. Or you could have just screamed "Pay it forward!" like a good little collectivist.

Obama If you've been successful you didn't get...

Nope, that’s your mom. I imagine you’d have a hard time recognizing her after I shaved her back.

Are there any other games that you think the rest of us should pay for so you don’t have to spend a little extra time and money entertaining your kids? Let’s see how deep this rabbit hole goes. Just how much of our money do you think you are entitled to so you can be a cheap, lazy parent?

You, sir or madam, are a real jack@ss!

Homeschooling parents pay the same as you for public schools; that their children don’t attend!

How about You bust out YOUR wallet and pay back people with NO kids for the schools your kids attend?

Jack@ss!

I paid out of my own pocket to send mine to a private school for 13 years. And I'm not rich. I ate lots of mac and cheese for more than a decade to make that happen while paying for the suburban welfare queens kids so they could afford nicer cars than I drove instead of paying the full freight for all those games. Spare me your indignation defending homeschool parents who are now proving that they just want more of my money to entertain their kids and aren't afraid to use big government to take it from me.

If it's money that was taken from me and everyone else by force to pay for their kids' playtime, it's welfare. I know you don't like to think of it like that because you think yourself to be a good conservative or some other nonsense but that doesn't make it any less of a transfer payment from me to you. You soccer moms have a sense of entitlement that would make the stereotypical inner city welfare queen blush.

Hell, I'll go one further. At least the inner city welfare queens are taking those ill gotten gains to keep a roof over their and their kids heads. You use the same force just to pay for your kids to play games. Go on and pretend you're better than them.

Homeschoolers hooking up to the soccer mom welfare train...It’s not my job to entertain and recreate the kids you brought into the world.

HUH?? Are you out of Midol?

Here's a brief overview of how this works, Sparky:

County and Local property taxes are confiscated even of those who oppose publik skool's Leftist agenda. The bulk of the monies are then monopolized by this publik skool system to pay staffs and teachers to indoctrinate mushy minds with an anti-America, pro-global, pro-gay, pro-"diversity" Leftist agenda. This same re-ejookation machination also happens to build HUGE sports complex with TAXPAYER FUNDS.

Thus...AT MINIMUM, these public school Indoctrination Centers should help home-schooler taxpayers recoup their "investment" in their local screwball "publik edjookashun" sytem by rightfully sharing the communal sports facilities.

You're welcome. Now call the pharmacy ASAP and refill that Thorazine script.

Orangedog - The article says that the legislation applies to private school students, too.

Do you know the real reason this law passed? Public schools tend to have a monopoly on high school sports. There are a few talented athletes who are either private-schooled or homeschooled, and the public school coaches want them playing on their teams. Yes, private schools AND homeschool organizations have their own teams, but usually the public high school offers a better opportunity for the athlete - because it's a monopoly.

But, can we agree on this: ALL education should be privatized. And competitive team sports schools should be privatized, too.

You DO realize that property taxes are confiscated by the local and county governments in order to create a communal police, skool, library, road maintenance, and various other bureaucratic depts, right? One person's "welfare" is an others "right".

Moreover, why must home-schoolers be compelled by coercion to pay taxes to subsidize a school agenda that they find subversive?

Look -- *I* don't like the notion that county mental health workers must take MY hard-earned money and subsidized *your* meds AND plow *your* street when it snows either. Because I'm not sure you're paying your fair share.
