In a New York Times interview published Saturday, President Obama came out foursquare against the Keystone XL pipeline, claiming that it would not create jobs. Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator, Obama said. There is no evidence that thats true. He then blamed Canada for not doing more to prevent carbon emissions from oil sands. Obama continued, I meant what I said; I'm going to evaluate this based on whether or not this is going to significantly contribute to carbon in our atmosphere. And there is no doubt that Canada at the source in those tar sands could potentially be doing more to mitigate carbon release.
Obama also blasted reports that job creation would be significant: [M]y hope would be that any reporter who is looking at the facts would take the time to confirm that the most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline which might take a year or two and then after that were talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 [chuckles] jobs in a economy of 150 million working people. He stated that gas prices would go up in parts of the United States thanks to Keystone XL:

Flip a coin...
If one were to flip that coin, it would land and balance on edge.
I suspect both.
While everyone fixates on the Keystone pipeline others are increasing capacity with little or no attention. There are protests against construction on the Embridge pipeline and whining about the lack of national exposure.
Industry implies 87 or 88% of oil would be used for US market.
I fail to see how an increase in supply, even if it’s less than that, drives up prices.
How did we ever get to the point where a SINGLE MAN could decide the fate of major PRIVATE energy projects? What a horrible state of affairs.
His remark, on the face of it, is ignorant and just plain stupid. We can debate the number of jobs created by Keystone XL, but it is certainly greater than zero. Building nothing and putting your money in a mattress is what will create zero jobs.
Why does he doe this? 1) Childlike belief in the evils of carbon? 2) Beholden to Buffet? 3) Beholden to Saudis? 4) Hatred of Canadians because of their British connection? 5) Loves to poke sticks in the eyes of Americans? 6) All of the above?
With all the projects underway, by latter this year, US exports from the Bakken and the Eagle Ford in Texas will reach record amounts.
Talk about getting screwed. We end up exporting sweet light oil to Canada and then import the heavy sour bitumen from the Canadian tar sands.
It’s still an oil train disaster with a Richter scale magnitude compared to US pipeline safety.
I believe that Obama sees the Keystone pipeline as a political winner. He can block it and meanwhile the production of oil and gas rises. He gets credit as an environmentalist and loses no points because there is more oil.
The Need for pipeline transport increase is apparently in the lower 48. That can be accomplished. New gas lines are being laid hereabouts from small fields parallel to existing lines.
Then there is the Canadian oil. It seems to be more expensive to refine and thus not really desirable if alternates are available.
Well, I guess THAT settles it; the expert on jobs creation has spoken.
Satire is now useless.
1984 is here people. They, our “leaders” like obama, simply lie to our faces claiming the truth is a lie and a lie is the truth. It must be freeing, really, to simply say whatever the heck you want to say. Just stay on message, push that agenda and don’t let reality get in your way.
The Great Master Of Economics and Knower Of Everything Worth Knowing, Barack H. Obama, has spoken. Who would dare to contradict the pearls of wisdom from such a font of brilliance and scholarship? (snicker)
Right, Baraq. Because we all know that increased supply leads to higher prices. That’s how economics has always worked.
At least in the minds of the deliberately obtuse.
I’ve heard many a..holes highly resent your linking of the well-respected Association of the Worlds anal orifices (A..World) with Obama.
Look what happened in quebec a few weeks ago, big boom, many dead. Yet, they want to use trains over pipe.
Bingo, Servant.
No one in the MSM ever calls Obama on ANYTHING.
This then becomes the perfect mechanism for the perception management that allows him to not only remain in power, but to actually INCREASE it.
We can only hope that reporters and editors somehow come to the realization that their job is to attack every statement of those in power; if the statements are true, they will hold up to the scrutiny.
The benefit of the Keystone pipeline is that the gulf refineries have a lot of excess capacity to refine heavy crude that was previously fulfilled by heavy crude from Venezuela.
Gasoline consumption in the US peaked in 2007 and given the increasing CAFE standards, gasoline usage will continue to fall while it will rise in other parts of the world.
We are exporting record amounts of gasoline and diesel. And given that demand for gasoline in the US will continue to fall, the only way for the oil companies/refiners to stabilize the price is thru exports.
Export baby, export.
What is the net effect of fewer train and trucking jobs? Cheaper finished petroleum products?
My post illustrates the difference in safety between moving oil via pipeline vs. railroad.
The origin and destination of the product is irrelevant.
