It seems that not even Beyonce or new, lower-calorie options can convince Americans to drink more soda.
Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc. all sold less soda in the second quarter in North America, dashing hopes for the moment that splashy new marketing and different sweetener mixes could get drinkers back.
Coca-Cola Co. said it sold 4 percent less soda in North America, while PepsiCo Inc. simply said its decline for the region was in the "mid-single digits." Dr Pepper sold 3 percent less of the fizzy drinks...

No soft drinks that I am aware of are made with corn syrup, but there may be some out there. However, there are many soft drinks that use HFCS as a sweetener, but that is a very different product from corn syrup. That’s why they call it HFCS, and not corn syrup. Corn syrup is typically 96% glucose, with some maltose, and other saccharides, but no fructose.

Do you really think that just 35 mg. of sodium in a 12 oz. coke can make you thirsty? Please.
And there are 5 mg of sodium in 12 oz. of seawater.
So, yes, I do.

I always get grief for posting this but I would serve my kids a glass of beer over a can of soda pop. Im no health nut but soda pop is just not good to put in your body.
Well, your screen name certainly attests to that! HAHA! And I agree!

Which is why we were specifically discussing soft drinks.
And not divinity recipes or pecan pies.

If seawater is 3.5% salt, 355 mL (12 oz) would have about 12.25 grams of salt.
NaCl is about 39% sodium, about 4.8 grams of sodium in 12 oz of seawater.
You're off by about a factor of 1000.

If the Coca Cola Company was adding sodium to their drinks, the FDA would, most likely, require them to list it on the ingredient deck. The reason they don't is because it is naturally included in the carbonated water that is listed as the first ingredient. It can also be found in the flavoring further down the deck.
They do not add it to make you thirsty.

Thanks for the assist with the math.
The salt content of the seawater at Siesta Beach this time of year is probably much higher than 3.5%. It keeps falling out of my hair as I type this.

If you are specifically discussing soft drinks, then you should be referring to it as high fructose corn syrup, because hfcs is very different than corn syrup. That is, if you want to be seen as knowing what you're talking about.

Classic Coke has 50mg/can, Pepsi has 30mg.
So it's not just the water.

If there isn’t any other corn syrup in soft drinks that would be redundant.

And Mexican coke has 85 mg. So what?
If they were adding sodium to the product it would be listed on the ingredient deck. They don't do so because it is naturally occurring. The flavoring used for each of these products is also different. There is varying levels of sodium in the flavor, depending on a lot of factors.
You may want to believe they are adding the sodium to create thirst, but it is ridiculous to think that 30mg, 50mg, or 85mg, of sodium in a 12 oz beverage is going to impact your thirst in any way. That thinking is as off as your math.
Everything is not a conspiracy to give you cancer, make you obese, or force you to drink more.

Whatever. My point was that anyone who knew what they were talking about wouldn't substitute corn syrup with high fructose corn syrup.
You appear to be someone who wants to be seen as knowing what they're talking about. I was simply trying to help.

Right.
Gotcha.
The discussion was soft drinks. I can see how you’d confuse that with divinity and pecan pie.

I make it a point to leave before they start. Brings a bad element to the beach, in addition to making for some awful noise.
That's just another reason we go to Lido beach more often.

Right.
But I don't see how someone with any knowledge of the subject could confuse corn syrup with hfcs, and then pretend like it doesn't matter. It's a commonly made mistake so don't take it so personally. K?

Yup. Especially when we were talking about soft drinks. They usually contain all sorts of ‘corn syrups’.
Have to be careful and make sure we’re talking about the ‘right one’ in there.
After all, it might be pecan pie soda or divinity fizz delight.
To: pepsionice
Wow, I bet you lost some weight after giving up all that soda. I used to drink a 20 ounce bottle of coke everyday. Glad I have given it up.
