HOUSTON -- A 52-year-old Houston woman was in critical condition after a vicious mauling by a pack of at least 15 stray dogs.
It happened around 6 a.m. on Monday near Lyons and Eastex Freeway in the Fifth Ward.
According to family members, Maria Arcos was walking to a nearby bus stop. She was on her way to start her first day on a new job as a housekeeper.
Arcos only made it about halfway.
She was under an overpass when a pack of mixed-breed strays surrounded her and brought her to the ground.
Its a pack mentality. That can happen when theres an aggressive act by one and it continues, said City of Houston Animal Control Manager Chris Glaser.
Glaser said a railroad employee saw Arcos being terrorized and dialed for help.
With that many dogs on her, she was being drug up and down the street, Glaser said.
Arcos was still conscious when officers arrived, but her family said the stress of the mauling caused her to have a heart attack.
Supposedly in 48 hours, if she doesnt get better, shes not going to make it, said stepson Oscar Reyes.

Hmmmm...disturbing...however ghetto dwellers have their ghetto challenges...what is born to the ghetto sadly will likely die there...this includes humans and animals...
When I was about 17, a dog showed up in our rural community and a bunch of dogs were packing around him. He attacked my bird dog and cut him up twice.
I happened to look down the hill across the field one day and saw about 20 dogs with him in the edge of a pasture close to a driveway leading to a poultry house. I got my gun, rode down close to where he was, jumped out of the car with my gun and shot him dead. Dogs scattered like flies and they quit packing immediately.
I feared for the lives of children playing outside in the community with dogs packing like that. We did not have, and did not need, a dog catcher in the community.
Oh yeah, did I forget to say guns are useful for protection against dangerous animals. . . which, unfortunately, sometimes includes humans.
Great story. Thank you for sharing.

You sure he wasn’t talking about a group of “youts”?
Sounds just their “method of operand”.
Who’s teaching the dogs?
From back in the “good old days” of America, about 70 years ago, when pack dogs were seen as such a threat that towns would hire men to shoot them, they had some very valuable advice.
An attack by a pack of dogs can be much like a feeding frenzy of sharks. Even being armed with a handgun may not be enough, because the dogs can behave in a crazed manner. Early on, you can shoot a dog to *wound* him instead of kill him, which is preferable, because his cries may distract the others for a *short* time. But seconds count. Once they are all attacking, they are oblivious to anything but “the kill”—you.
You must get to a protected place, and quickly. If you are out in the open you are in terrible trouble. Make every bullet count.
Today things are actually worse, because there are more large dogs, and they are more of capable fighting breeds. Some are regularly fed at home, and leave to join a pack for some hours, then return home. No fear of humans at all.
If you need to hunt a pack of dogs, primary weapon is a scoped rifle. Second a handgun, and third a large bladed weapon. Don’t do it alone.
This is SS. Shoot and shut up. Don’t even bother shoveling.
ghetto dwellers?
Not sure what you mean.
I lived at the edge of rural town of about 1,900 a few years ago. Several mornings, when I went outside to smoke a cig around 5 a.m. (still dark), I noticed a pack of dogs — 20 or more — come running from north to south through the northern section of the town. The pack had all sorts of sizes and breeds in it.
Packs can form in any area where there are strays or even runaway pet dogs.

Absolutely yes. When I was a kid, there were homes near us that had their horses mauled. Many of the poor horses had their legs broken and had to be put to sleep. The culprits? Family pet dogs that were let out in the morning hours to do their business. They essentially packed up. Some of the dogs were what we would call “foo foo” dogs. That is, small dogs like Yorkies and small poodles. There were some larger dogs as well. I am guessing the dogs met up in the morning and evening time and acted like “wolves”. How the families didn’t know when Trixie or Moxy came home blood soaked is beyond me.
Sadly, this is becoming more common as people lose their homes to Obamanomics and ‘free’ their dogs, hoping somebody will take them in rather than handing them over to shelters.
There is nothing that is untouched by the won.
I hope the poor woman makes it.
:(
I’m from Houston....Lyons and easttex is ghetto
Houston has areas hat are notorious for animal dumping...amusing o note they are all in Sheila Jackson lees instruct...
Lyons and easttex is inner city and ghetto...
That is more disturbing than a pack of dogs out in the country...that have protein sources other than human...
This is EXACTLY what's going on in my neck of the desert. We live in a 70+ community 10 miles from a small town in Nevada. People fall on hard times and come out here and drop off "little Muffie", who turns out to be a mixed breed pit bull, like the one that came after my wife on the back porch.
He yelped and took off after Mr. Ruger planted a .22 hollow-point in his chest. Neighbors later asked me if I had seen "that big dog roaming about". The halo over my head was blinding.
You should probably brag about shooting dumped dogs to somebody else.
Anybody who wounds -any- animal and lets it go off to die in agony sucks, IMO.
Finish the job or don’t start it.
Frankly, I’m amazed you were able to DNA the dog’s breed before you shot it.
Bravo.
Bravo yourself. You gonna pay for my wife's medical bill?
That wasn't bragging, just stating a fact. It's done all the time out here with feral dogs, as they have crippled people's horses.
I've had pit bull and their mutations come after me before and this boy fit the bill. ANY animal, two- or four-legged, who attacks my wife is committing suicide.
CLICK! I just added a punch to your PETA card. Now go wallow in your self-righteousness.
