Delaware state officials have told Congress that they likely destroyed the computer records that would show when and how often they accessed Christine O’Donnell’s personal tax records and acknowledged that a newspaper article was used as the sole justification for snooping into the former GOP Senate candidate’s tax history.
The revelations to Sen. Chuck Grassley’s office came Tuesday as the Treasury Department’s inspector general for tax administration, the government’s chief watchdog for the Internal Revenue Service, formally reopened its investigation into the matter by re-interviewing Ms. O’Donnell.
“It is an active investigation now,” Ms. O’Donnell told The Washington Times after meeting with the same Treasury agent who first informed her in January that her tax records were improperly accessed.
She declined to be more specific about what the agent questioned her about in Tuesday’s session.
But Mr. Grassley, an Iowa Republican who serves on the Judiciary and Finance committees, said he was concerned by the information Delaware state officials shared with his investigators.

I wonder if any court cases are actually going to be decided for the defendant because the government won’t turn over evidence that it is known to have.

I still receive mail for several months of child support the state couldn't garnish from my wages because of brief period of unemployment. When I become employed again, my ex and I agreed on payment plan to make up for the missed payments. After 9 years of no word from the States agency and 7 years after the payments where finished, the State sends me a 5 digit bill for the missed payments and 10% interest in a period when the interest rate was < 3%.
So, if I destroy my tax records or receipts from 2010 and tell the IRS, that I merely don’t have them any more but they should trust me, what I tell them is correct, I’m OK, right?

That is outrageous.
I could see some low level computer record being deleted after three months but surely it's SOP to generate a more enduring official record of such an action. Otherwise the agency would be unaccountable and could drill into your records on a whim. The very fact that there's no paper trail is a scandal in itself and easily justifies more vigorous digging. I hope Grassly hangs tough because this stuff, just the lawlessness of it, is truly disturbing.
If you read a little further into the article a possible reason appears for why the records are missing. The state is claiming that they accessed the records on Saturday the 20th when the newspaper article came out (which erroneously mentioned a lien against O'Donnell's house), but O'Donnell says she was told by the investigator that it was earlier, on the 9th, which was the day she announced her candidacy.

Just give a call to the NSA. I’m pretty sure they have a backup copy of... everything.
First thing should be to find the person who pushed the “delete” button on the records and go from there.

You know this country wasn’t set up like this, and certainly other Presidents have done bad things. But no one in my lifetime has ever used the Government agencies to punish political opponents to this extent.
Obama has turned all agencies into tools for his payback of the Honkie because he was born half-black.
