Is Social Security disability program ‘backdoor welfare’?
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 07/09/2103 | Eric Boehm

SNIP-- But in recent years, the number of workers receiving disability checks has shot upwards at an alarming rate. Nationally, the number of disability beneficiaries rose by 39 percent between 2003 and 2011. In Pennsylvania, the rate climbed by 50 percent during the same period. More than 300,000 Pennsylvanians now collect a monthly social security disability check. The recent rise in disability payments is also counterintuitive. In a day and age when medical advances mean people are living longer and healthier lives than ever before, shouldn’t there be fewer disabled workers? DeHaven says it is because Congress has expanded eligibility to the point that Social Security disability has been turned into “a back-door welfare program”

“Under the social security disability program, people are getting money they are entitled to that has been taken out of their paychecks over the years,” he said. “It’s disingenuous to call it a hand-out.”

Call it a scam if you want but it is an insurance program just like any other privately held policy. The problem lies in the unusual definition of 'disability' as pointed out in the article that includes non medical issues.

SSDI (disability) is not the same as SSI and are often confused.

Consider if you were involved in an automobile accident and turned in an insurance claim to your insurer, should you feel guilty??? I don't think you would, after all that is what you paid for.

If you knew how many children labeled “special education” (learning disabled, behavior disordered, etc.) receive disability you would feint.

ALL Taxpayer handout-for-Votes Programs are simply wealth-redistribution for the benefit of Re-Election, and let the taxpayers be the deep pockets.

Banks, Businesses, Minorities, Baby-Killing support, etc. are ALL just money-laundering to get re-Elected, and when the taxpayers are gone, the Civil War will weed out the non-productive.

I wish congress understood the adverse effects that disability often has on individuals & their families. Most people, including people born with handicaps, have things they can do in society. Consider Helen Keller — deaf & blind — oh, my, what a woman!

But the worst is when the disabled person’s children are affected. “Little Sean needs a note for school.”

“Oh, well, no he isn’t sick — we overslept. And can you excuse him for the last week?”

These so-called disabled people call it the "crazy check". There is nothing wrong with them. It can't be proved one way or the other.

"Social Security judges who evaluate people’s claims have a list of acceptable diseases/donditions which qualify the qualify for disability."

ONE of the questions on the Form that asks "RACE" should be removed.

If you check "Black", "Hispanic", and also check "not working", you go to the top of the stack for Approvals.

Whites cannot claim they were denied because of their "Race", whereas, there's always Discrimination Claims for the non-whites if they're denied.

How many inner-city tribal parasites do you think are collecting EBT's, Food Stamps, Section 8 housing, WIC, Medicaid Coverage, and ALSO get SSDI funds?????

I agree there are abuses, but I have a relative who is most definitely disabled by a disease no one should have. The payments are not generous.

Yep I encountered one family who had three “disabled” kids. At $700 per month SSI per child that is $2100.00 per month. Over $25,000.00 per year. Cash, tax free.

Their “disability”? ADHD. All three.

In an economy with low unemployment, employers would have to be a lot less selective, and it would be easier for the borderline disabled to find jobs they could adapt to. Add to that, why would an employer hire a disabled person with all of the hassle providing for their needs, or if they want to fire them?

Are there people who game the system? Sure. There are a lot more, though, who are for real. I'd prefer it if they had to do some kind of work to get a check, or course. That's another issue.

When I moved to WA several years ago I really learned how bad the "disability" situation was. The guy we hired to mow our lawn was on permanent disability for falling off a ladder years earlier. He does odd jobs when he's not out on his sailboat.

We have two duplexes up there... about 90% of all applicants are on disability for things like being obese, attention deficit, or various other "conditions".

The system was created by people of good will so those who couldn’t work and were disabled would be able to live with dignity.

When enough scammers abuse they system it’ll go bankrupt - when that happen the scammers will move on to the next scam and the elderly and those really disabled will die.
