Health-nut Mayor Bloomberg wants NYers to take the stairs instead of the elevator
The New York Post ^ | July 18, 2013 | SALLY GOLDENBERG

...The bill, which City Council Speaker Christine Quinn quickly endorsed, would require that newly constructed stairways be equipped with glass doors to make them more appealing...

..."If you sit for seven hours in front of a computer, you need to get up and walk. It’s good for you," said Marina Pyatetski, a 40-year-old city worker at the Municipal Building in lower Manhattan...

I think it's good for you to try to practice a Christian life, should that be imposed on the public? Is imposing health-nazi stuff that much different than imposing a religion?

If you go read the entire article you would swear it’s from The Onion or something similar. We are doomed.

It’s kinda funny. ALL of the stuff that Bloomberg wants to make the law are actually things a reasonable person might choose to do. But only the central planners and nanny state make it a law.

This applies to seat belts and helmets, btw.

Not a bad idea actually as long as it’s just presented as an option and doesn’t entail shutting down elevators and stopping escalators.

Employers will sell this as an “employee safety issue” under the guise of prudent use of ObamaCare dollars

The big and obvious difference is that the cost of stupidity is incorporated into the insurance rates that all motorists/motorcyclists pay and as a result, smart drivers who would wear seatbelts/helmets without a mandate pay for the increased injuries and deaths of those people who are too stupid to help themselves.

If you are not wearing your seat belt, insurance only fixes half your face. Problem solved.

If you are not wearing a helmet, head injuries not covered. - Problem solved.

Individual freedom is not possible without individual responsibility!

I used to belong to the cascade bicycle club and I had this argument with the president of the club. He made the argument you made. I told him that although helmets did reduce risk somewhat, that the reality was that taking bikes off the roads would DRASTICALLY reduce the risk to all the rate payers, and plenty of drivers would love to get us off the road.

i.e. I completely reject the “it lowers everybody’s rates” arguments. It is Socialist in spirit.

BTW, Bloomberg can use that same argument regarding his health laws.

Did the good mayor & city council stop to calculate the increased cost of Fire-Proof GLASS doors?

Probably cheaper to install a Stair-Master in the hallway on each floor of the building. Or replace the tables & booths in the company cafeteria with treadmills/stair masters, equipped with cup holders & trays and a “Calories Consumed minus Calories Burned” meter.

Make the elevators lined with mirrors.

Replace the Muzak with recordings of “You are really getting FAT!” and “Hi, Tubby! How’s your day going?”

Hang Rosanne Barr posters next to the elevator, labelled “I’m going for the Rosanne look!”

When presented the option, I always take the stairs (if it’s not in a high rise), but they are often dirty and dimly lit.

My Dad’s advise on keeping fit was never sit when you can stand, never walk when you can run, and never take an elevator when you can take the stairs.

My Mom’s advice was a bit more practical. Never pass up a bathroom or a water fountain.

I would prefer to deregulate the insurance industry so that insurers can charge a higher automobile insurance premium to the pool of drivers who are too stupid to wear seat-belts on their own without a law.

I would take stairs more often if I didn’t think they were scary and dark and good places for bad guys

Walking downstairs is fine. People with dicky hearts, obesity and other health problems, should not be walking upstairs. It is very hard on the heart. And, yet again, Bloomberg needs to get out of town. Forever.

When I worked (70s & 80s) at Rock Center (GE Bldg) on 32nd floor, at an ad agency, that was quite a hike up to 32, especially in a 3-piece suit, Burberry trenchcoat and w/ briefcase. I did it a few times just for grins at 6-7am. Mostly, we waited at the street level bank of elevators for a ride up. I’d also walk north from Penn Station to Rock Ctr, daily, all year long, regardless of weather. Great little food shops along the way.

but old bloomie does not practice what he preaches. there for has no creditability in the public’s eye, except for the ubber health nut cakes.

There are many people who could not walk up 15+ flights of stairs. You have heart patients, wheel chair bound, MS, MD, ALS any number of auto immune patients, and bad backs to contend with. Apparently mr nanny is in perfect health.
