Liz Cheney Would Be Fourth Republican Senator To Back Gay Marriage
by David Mark
Liz Cheney, 2014 Republican Senate candidate in Wyoming, and daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney. AP There are few policy differences between Wyoming Republican Senate candidate Liz Cheney and the incumbent she's trying to oust in 2014, Sen. Mike Enzi. Except for one issue: Gay marriage. Unlike Enzi, the 46-year-old daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney supports the right for states to legalize gay marriage. At least that's what she said in 2009, in an interview with MSNBC, of all places. At that was a time when the notion of same-sex marriage had considerably less support. And that has even Daily Kos writer Scott Welch offering at least limited praise for Liz Cheney. Cheney, Welch writes: Seemed to indicate tentative support for marriage equality and LGBT rights at large, saying: 'Well, look I think, you know, my family has been very clear about this, that we think freedom means freedom for everybody and that this is an issue that states have to decide for themselves.' While Cheney's language is hardly a full-throated, ringing endorsement of equality ('this is an issue that states have to decide for themselves'), her aligning herself with her family is encouraging: her sister, Mary, who is an out lesbian and her father both are on record support marriage equality. She went on to reiterate opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, expressed support for the State Department's extension of benefits to same-sex couples, and said, 'I think it's wrong to discriminate, in those relationships, based on someone's sexual preference.' Additionally, she supported repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. All this leads me to wonder, should we be rooting for Cheney in her primary campaign against Enzi? Don't get me wrong: I would abhor seeing either of them elected to the Senate. Both embrace the Tea Party agenda and the right's nutty conspiracy theories wholeheartedly. That being said, even if the primary is as ugly as possible, the winner of the GOP primary will, come 2014, be elected Senator in a state as ruby red as Wyoming. Given that either of them would both toe the Tea Party line if elected, why not root for Cheney in the hopes that she might be a sleeper vote for LGBT rights such as the Employee Non-Discrimination Act? It's hard to see on what issues she might be farther to the right than Enzi. If elected, Cheney would be the fourth Republican senator to back same-sex marriage, along with Mark Kirk, Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Rob Portman (Ohio). Most Democratic senators have said they support gay marriage.
Sen. Mike Enzi, her GOP primary opponent, opposes it

The numbers are irrelevant, they will be allowed to travel to any state in the union and their families will be recognized as such.
Your role that I witness on thread after thread, is to jump on threads like this one on Liz Cheney’s candidacy as a pro-gay politician, to promote gay marriage.
I am so sick and tired of our “ruling elite” dynasties and their love affair with deviant sex acts. Enough!
The fact that she supports gay marriage, opposed DOMA, and even opposes a constitutional amendment against gay marriage .
Yes, she supports your agenda of get r done.
Like a growing number of rinos, Liz Cheney is “libertarian” aka “leftist” on the issue.
“Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government’s treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships.”
Whatever.
Her sister Mary is a lesbian? I thought queer Mary was her daughter.
Why are you fighting so hard to hide that fact about this Senate candidate and the gay agenda?
“Whatever.”
Hey, you asked him a straightforward question and he answered it in kind.
Too bad the answer wasn’t what you wanted to hear.
What's especially damning is her fan club presents her as the "more conservative" candidate in super safe Wyoming, yet her views put her in the same camp as the Massachuttes Romneybots, not to mention Lisa Murkowski and Mark Kirk.
Good luck selling those "values" in Wyoming. I'm betting she avoids talking about this like the plague. Too late though, voters won't be fooled.
I’m tryng to support traditional, one man, one woman marriage within the framework of the Constitution.
Sure you are, that is why you keep ignoring that she is against a constitutional amendment to save marriage, and why as we are already having it imposed on us you direct your energies at the conservatives.
At the end of your efforts lies gay marriage, gays in the military, gay immigration, gay adoption, the things that you are fighting for.
Libertarians fight for their leftist agenda at all levels of politics, city, county, state, and federal, their agenda is the left’s, to overcome social conservatism.
That is why you are on this thread titled “”Liz Cheney Would Be Fourth Republican Senator To Back Gay Marriage””, to assist getting in office the rinos who support your gay agenda.
While I would support an amendement which protects traditional one man, one woman marriage, I don't see the Constitution being amended for that purpose in the foreseeable future.
As I menioned previously, if my approach to protecting traditional marriage seems like I'm doing just the opposite to you, its because I'm trying to protect traditional marriage within the framework of the Constitution. And right now marriage is a 10A-protected state power issue.
For the record, you take every chance you can to promote gay marriage.
This thread is about a social liberal rino trying to take a senate seat, and sure enough, you showed up to defend her candidacy because it is the homosexual agenda that we are attacking her on.
You are defending gay marriage in the states it is already in, you are fighting conservatives who are trying to stop it, at the end, just like all the other leftist issues libertarians promote, is gay marriage.
Not only have you been ignoring Cheney being against an amendment, you continue to ignore her support of ending DADT, and the just allowed gay marriage in the military, and federal employment, and in immigration, ALL federal.
I don't know why you think your little fig leaf that you hide behind works.
Even rinos like Romney who have decades of promoting the homosexual agenda, now talk about states rights in a Ted Kennedy argument of "I'm personally opposed to abortion, but.....".
I don’t care about gay marriage, but I read, on a few sites, that Sen. Enzi is one of the most conservative U.S. senators. I hope that he’ll win. She should run for a lower office.
Conservatives DO care about the ending of marriage and destruction of the family in Western Civilization, conservative economics cannot exist with social liberalism.
I want perfect voters.
I can see both sides of that issue, since I know some gay people, who want to get married. In places where gay marriage is legal, I hope that the ceremonies are only be performed by judges. No Christian church should consider performing those ceremonies.
There aren’t two sides to marriage, and your friends have always been able to marry, if they can find someone of the opposite sex who agrees to marry them.
There are three sides to this issue. Some people want to ban same-sex marraige. Some people want to legalize same-sex marriage. Some people, including me, don’t care.
