Known as The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, the 10,600-acre park opens Monday, when 30,000 scouts are expected to visit for the quadrennial National Jamboree. The Summit will have more than 5 miles of zip lines, a whitewater-rafting circuit, a 120-foot tree house and a stadium for 85,000 people.

PING
Including a luxurious bath house for the newest group of Scouts.
Well, they won’t get one more red cent out of me or even one more minute of time for volunteering, now that they have renigged on their oath to be morally straight and to be reverent to God.
Pinging the list.
Not surprised that this is happening. Most BSA councils, my former one included, live almost hand-to-mouth and rely heavily on regular donations as well as “special contributions” to maintain the physical plant (council camps, among other things).
The small $25-$50 donations from ordinary folks who were Scouts, or who currently have boys in Troops, are starting to dry up what with National’s decision to go gay. I’ve been approached twice since the announcement and have refused both times.
While the “choice” has assured that the big corporate donations will continue to roll in (at least for the time being), those won’t be enough to keep the operation solvent in the long-term.
Saving up for when they Philmont on the market.
WTF?!
Half a Billion Dollars for a bridge and a stadium that neither even get mentioned for the entire 2013 Jamboree.
Everything that the boys will be doing such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, rock climbing, and zip lines are just about free to implement...so the $600,000/year Executives went $400 Million in debt for a bridge and a staduium?!
WTF?!
I wouldn’t buy any of those bonds, especially with those outstanding lawsuits, probably new lawsuits now that queers are allowed, that outlandishly expensive camp, dismal revenue and membership projections and a bunch of top level management skimming big salaries off the top. What chance do bond holders have of recovering anything in case of a default.
I understand that obese scouts can’t attend because of stress of hiking up steep slopes.
I’ve taken obese Scouts to Philmont at least 3 times, and they typically lose 30 to 50 pounds over two weeks.
It’s life-changing for them.
Most have been coddled by helicopter mamas or ignored by dual-incomers all of their lives.
When they return the next year they are always in better shape and have vastly better attitudes.
This is no surprise. If a bunch of boys cant get together and camp out and learn about virtue without giving into corporate pressure, namely AT&T, then they are obviously dependent on a lot of money for something they dont need
I was a Boy Scout in a hardcore backpacking troop. We had a few fat and/or soft kids in the troop. Those of us who made it to the base camp first would double back 2-3 miles to the slowest hikers and carry their packs for them. It's called teamwork.
Did a 60-mile trek over 10 days in the north country of Philmont in 1990 with a 2 crews of 9 boys and 3 adults, each. I was 35 and in very good condition before the trek. Still lost quite a few lbs, but never went hungry. They really had the menu/nutrition science down pat. Upon returning to the real world, colleagues at work were laughing and pointing at my posterior asking, "Where's your ass?"
As others have pointed out over the last 1.5 months, at some point down the pike, BSA will be faced with a "fire sale" for its properties - either the big 4 national high adventure bases and/or local council camps. Others have speculated that some religious denominations (of course, they are all losing membership, too) may be positioned to pick up some of these properties when they become available.
Donald Rumsfeld served on staff at Philmont in the late 1940s, is a Distinguised Eagle Scout, and retired somewhere in north central NM - west of Philmont. Wonder if he could be approached to help OnMyHonor.Net?
Stupid decisions usually or eventually have bad consequences.
Eagle Scout, three trips to Philmont, Scout Leader, Dad was a Scout Leader for over 20 years.... I gave up on Scouts with my son because it was nothing like something we wanted and that was years ago. He thought I was putting up with all the ADHD Ritilan laced brats for him and I thought he was doing it for me. One day we both confessed to each other we’d rather spend our time doing scout things together without all the brats and yuppie parents.
It has gotten worse. More than $600,000 a year for the top five scout execs? You gotta be kidding me.
Dad always said national and region were not about the boys. He was right and more so today.
Actually, I don't think so. I think the corporate donors who were pushing this will put their dollars behind some other initiative. By holding the carrot of corporate money out in front of the National leaders they got everything they wanted and by following that up by not delivering on promises they can't legally be held to they deliver the death blow.
I won't be surprised to see corporate funding of the Girl Scouts dry up as well now that the fascist crowd no longer see them as a useful example of corporate reliability to tantalize the Boy Scouts leadership with.
The park would bring in even more in donations than it would cost to build, Scout leaders concluded.
It is seldom just one thing that causes the demise of an organization. This is one of several.
BSA deserves all the trouble they get -
No one is going to “step in” to save $600,000/year Executives who are spending over $400 Million in debt for an 85,000 seat stadium in a part of West Virginia that won’t see 85,000 people visit all year.
If you’ve ever seen a company lose money in the real world, you don’t step in to save it...you let it spend itself to death and then you buy up its assets in the inevitable fire sale.
The rub for Scouts, however, is that some rather vindictive liberals want to buy up the properties to turn them into left-wing shrines to homosexuals and environmentalists just to rub in the fall of the Scouts...
...and the flip side is that the Scouts are spending so much that no one can save them from that fall.
because they are not sexy enough maybe
Corporate money was nice while it lasted, but it was the Boy Scouts downfall. The park, the bonds, the high salary jobs and the nice offices became more important than the mission.
And once the BSA were enslaved to the money, all the gay lobby had to do was put the public relations screws to BSA’s corporate sponsors - which is exactly what they have done.
