Snowden Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize After ‘Disrepute Incurred’ for Picking Obama By Andrew Johnson July 15, 2013 11:49 AM

A Swedish professor has nominated NSA leaker Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize for his revelations of the surveillance program, but also to redeem the award’s prestige after it was awarded to President Obama in 2009.

In his letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Umea University’s Stefan Svallfors argues that Snowden, who would be the award’s youngest winner at 30, exemplified that “individuals can stand up for fundamental rights and freedoms.” Svallfors lauded Snowden’s “heroic effort at great personal cost.”

In 2009, President Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize after less than a year in office, drawing criticism for the committee’s prematurity, including from Svallfors. The professor says that picking Snowden would “help to save the Nobel Peace Prize from the disrepute incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision to award US President Barack Obama the 2009 award.”

According to the Daily Mail’s translation of his statement, Svallfords believes Snowden to be a “highly affordable candidate.” Similiar past nominees include Wikileaks’ Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, who did not win.

I agree, Vet! Snowden’s actions have been a global game-changer. At the very least, he has proven that those who distrust government are NOT “conspiracy nuts.”

His recent revelation about Microsoft working with the NSA to help the latter bypass encryption is especially worth noting as an instance of collusion between the growing police state and corporations. Think your encrypted hard drive is safe? Think again.

Not a chance. Trayvon Martin is getting the Peace Prize.

If posthumous Nobel prizes were allowed, you might be right.

On the other hand, can't Jeremiah Wright's "Church" try to canonize Trayvon Martin as a saint?

Yeah. Every year, there are these "______ was nominated for a Nobel Prize," from people who don't realize that the nomination process is basically meaningless.

There's an assortment of kooks and frauds that put "nominated for a Nobel Prize" as the first lines on their resume, banking on people not understanding that everyone and their dog can get nominated for a Nobel Prize, and thinking it works like the Oscars or something with only 5 nominees.

but also to redeem the award’s prestige after it was awarded to President Obama in 2009....

It's a tragedy that we'll have to wait another few years to find out who they'll use to redeem Snowden getting it...

I’ve noticed that has become the case for just about every award nowadays.

What? Is that a whiff of common sense I smell in the air? Smells great!

The bottom line is this. Since Obama was elected, people on the right have screamed bloody murder for a government insider to come forward and expose the BS going on behind closed doors.

Snowden did exactly that.

Now the very same people who demanded a government insider come forward are the ones calling him every name in the book.

This is known by any thinking being as blatant hypocrisy.

None of the above can be denied as it is all historically and logically accurate. So the question then becomes, why should people on the right ever expect any insider to blow the whistle EVER AGAIN when they have thoroughly proven they are no more trustworthy than a freaking Democrat?

Has one Nobel Peace Prize winner ever branded another one a criminal and traitor? Just wondering.

But, at least Snowden did SOMETHING to earn it - unlike the Muslim-in-Chief.

Edward Snowden has given the people of the United States information that heretofore had been concealed from them. I am an old school conservative, Constitutional American, and I say Edward Snowden has done us a great service.

We need to re-validate Snowden’s passport and invite him to come home to stand trial — unfettered, ungagged, and public. It isn't likely to happen, though; politicians on both sides have too much to lose. Our republic has been highjacked and our freedoms, like our currency, have lost much of their luster.

If Messrs. Obama and McCain hate and fear “the little hacker,” you should spend some time wondering why. Our security may have taken a little ding, but Edward Snowden has struck a huge blow for freedom.
