Opposition to President Obama's nominee for U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic reached a fever pitch this week as religious organizers stage a "Lunes Negros" or Black Monday protest against James "Wally" Brewster.
If confirmed, Brewster will be the first openly gay ambassador to the country, a prospect that is not going over well with some segments of this conservative Christian country of 9 million people. Local reports indicate that church leaders are pressuring the government to reject Brewster's nomination and calling on the faithful to dress in black on Monday in solidarity against him.
Praise Christian Church Pastor Sauford Medrano is quoted in Diario Libre as saying that Brewster could cause "the U.S. promotion of gender beliefs in the country." That supposedly violates a general education law in the country that "all the Dominican education system is based on Christian principles."

that is because you have a horrid racist, bigoted condition called sanity
even though with that , what kind of a man wants a penis pushing his feces, YUCK, it’s down right disgusting even if they do straighten out IMHO and certainly not healthy
Rich nations have sex for hire
My maternal ancestors were once poor as hell
None whores or robbers to my knowledge
Poverty made me do it is often a canard for cultural exceptions
Dominicans. Not to be confused with Cubans.
lol
Obie couldn’t find a retired shortstop or lefthanded reliever for this job? Gotta be a bunch of them that can speak both languages now.
As a matter of fact, I know a Cuban who played in the Big Leagues so that point is well taken. He is religious, in a way I can see Conservative Values may exist in some of these countries without actually calling it a “Conservative Nation”, might be something to it. No matter what, our impression is that most of these places are Banana Republics.
Personally, I think we should be applauding the Dominicans for this.
Oh, it goes along the lines with the STate Department staffing our embassies in muslim nations with gays and black women, knowing how it goes with arabs to deal with that in their face. You know, we have the most idiotic domestic PC policies that do not advance our being taken seriously abroad.
Pride it is. Shooting the boat hull cuz he cannot be the captain, that is the fate of America the liberal today.
Celbrities celebrating without winning a fight, and yet calling that peace.
Andy, your gaydar might need adjusting. 5/6 of the last ambassadorial appointments have been openly gay. The guy who bought it in Libya? So open about it that he ran a help-wanted ad seeking local help who were involved in long-term gay relationships. The friendly sons of Allah were so impressed with his openess about being gay that they buggered him to death.
There are many queers everywhere and goodly number of the cookie-pushers at DoS certainly are. But part of being a diplomat is to know where it's not a good idea to share info about one's sexual preferences ... you know, keep it on the down low.
If the Dominicans are really angry, they'll cut off their major export to the US: professional baseball players. It's actually a very beautiful country, but it's never a good idea to share an island with Haiti.
placemark.

If Obama wants to be really courageous, he should send a gay ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Not going to happen.

This does not seem to be in most of the other stories on this topic, whether it is actually a slur is a subject of a debate in some venues I see but I would surmise it is not a kind word to use.
Ain’t it amazin’ that the “first black president” is a RED queen with a RED beard?
