‘Ender’s Game’ Author Speaks Out on Boycott of Movie Version Over His Anti-Gay Marriage Statements
Yahoo Movie Talk ^ | July 9th, 2013 | Mark Deming

Posted on 07/09/2013 4:25:52 PM PDT by Ripliancum

The author of the novel "Ender's Game" has spoken out about the controversy that's flared up over the upcoming movie adaptation in the past few days, but he doesn't sound eager to smooth ruffled feathers, declaring the statements that angered fans are "moot."

Geeks OUT, a group that "rallies, empowers, and promotes the queer geek community," are calling for a boycott of the "Ender's Game" movie based on statements about gay marriage made by Orson Scott Card, who wrote the much-loved young adult sci-fi novel in 1985. Card, a strongly outspoken opponent of gay marriage, wrote of the subject in a 2008 op-ed piece for a Salt Lake City newspaper, declaring, "Marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down."

As Geeks OUT's campaign has gained media attention, Card has issued a statement, and anyone hoping he'd sound apologetic is out of luck.

Did you vote for Paul Ryan in 2012?

Mitt looked fairly healthy...

But, then again, so did JS before he presented himself to the jailer at carthage...

It’ll sink in shortly that I value a persons RELIGIOUS views more than their political ones.

I already knew what kind of a devil we’d be getting with Obama...

Thanks ...

I guess that means everything you say about the dreadful mormonses that didn't support McPain in 2008 can be said of you in 2012.

Simply put, if those who didn't support McPain/Palin in 2008 are to be held responsible for the rise of Barackula the Destroyer, then those who didn't support R0mney/Ryan in 2012 are to be held responsible for continuation in power of Barackula the Destoryer.

Congratulations.

You have made that fairly clear. I'm mildly curious as to what your criteria you use in determining for whom to vote.

Apparently, yes. That may just be God’s plan for me.

Yup; you can surely say that.

And I could say that you think a political solution can be found to cure our Nation's ills.

I say it cannot...

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, who are called by my name,
shall humble themselves,
and pray, and seek my face,
and turn from their wicked ways; ,

then will I hear from heaven,
and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land.

Like you said in #59 - they are inseparable.

We've seen the results of trying to 'balance the ticket'; as one side of the teeter-totter never touches the ground.

So when the IDIOTS that are running the GOP thought they could 'balance' a DECEIVED Mormon with a Catholic; they got an even WORSE result!

Pissing off an awful lot of Conservative Christians in this country is sure as HELL no way to try to win an election!

The FR folks who wanted O out so badly, HAD to cling to the unwinnable Romney; or get scathing slurs hurled their way.

The wimpy RINO McCain, was replaced with a man who was not only a wimpy RINO; but also so poor in discernment that he believes the stuff the SLC pumps out!

Now THIS made me chuckle!

Actually; the GOD that I know about indicates OTHER plans for you.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

You could say that, but you'd be wrong. The failure of electoral politics to solve the problems of a spiritually ill society became obvious to me some time in the late 1980s.

I’m glad you’ve realized it before me.

At least we are on the same page about it.

It’s no particular credit to me. By the Grace of God, under some very strange circumstances, I spent about three years working with and in a pro-life pregnancy center. It was a very enlightening experience.

“unlike the anti Romney goons who could not rest from their labors of bashing and trashing the 2012 Presidential nominee.”

First, I’m not sure what qualifies someone as a “goon”. Is it only conscientious conservatives who followed their own convictions that are considered goons?

Does telling the truth about RINOmney’s actual actions and votes and words count as bashing and trashing?

Put me down as someone who always tries to follow my convictions and understanding of truth. I fail, but I get up and try again. If that makes me a goon in your eyes, I’m OK with that.

Very few FReepers worked against Romney after he was the only one standing against Obama

That's true. I think the desperation to get rid of Obama forced a lot of people to vote for Romney. The Republicans really screwed over it's base. But they've been doing that for a long time.

After the 2008 election, Romney's team worked overtime in attacking Palin. They had to take her out so their golden boy could run.

Very few FReepers worked against Romney after he was the only one standing against Obama, even though it was obvious from the beginning that Mr. RomneyCare the lifelong big government aborrionist/statist had no chance whatsoever. [JimRob]

Allow me to flesh out what Jim Rob points out as it applied to my 2012 anti-Romney FR posts:

* Out of respect for JimRob's political stance that he took in mid-August, I did not even post after Aug. 17 until October. I didn't post anything Romney related for over 8 weeks.

* When I returned just over 3 weeks prior to the election, I jumpstarted more anti-Obama threads (2) than Romney-related ones (1). And I didn't post any new Romney threads those 20 days leading up to the election.

* And as of when Gingrich dropped out, for 3 months up until mid-August, I averaged jumpstarting only one Romney related thread per week. [Surely, the Romney world could withstand a Baker's dozen - or so -- of these kind of pure political discourse threads]

And if a few others posted Romney related threads during that time, hey, it IS a Free Republic, after all! [Not everybody bends the knee to Salt Lake City HQ]

[To District13, who showed her Mormon "ambassadorship" by labeling those who told the truth about RINO Romney as "goons"]:

And I tried to keep my Romney comments related to his POLITICAL faults; while still jumping on Mormonism related threads with as much facts as much as I could.
