Country singer Randy Travis has been admitted to a Texas hospital and is listed in critical condition, according to his public relations firm.
The six-time Grammy winner is suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy.
"Cardiomyopathy is the term for any disease of the heart muscle that interferes with the hearts ability to pump blood with sufficient force," according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Travis' condition, which is viral, was caused by an infection in the heart.
Travis, 54, was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
The illness is a continuation of a tough run for the "Three Wooden Crosses" singer after a handful of recent high-profile appearances, including a performance during the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert series.
Travis had also performed at the memorial service for slain ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in February.
Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.
Travis was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $2000 and given a 180-day suspended jail sentence. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.
In August 2012, he was cited after a dustup at a church in the parking lot of Prestonwood Baptist Church.
In November, Travis said through his attorney that he had put together a personal program to get sober. He had also returned to the recording studio.
He recovered, got Married and had a kid. Last time I saw him he was on some heavy duty drugs.
I’ll assume he still plays Blackjack, if he’s still alive.
On the other Hand
Great song. I wore out a cassette of his album Storms of Life back in the 80’s in my 1978 Ford Pickup. When I wrecked that truck in 86 it was probably in the cassette deck.
perhaps.
This same thing happened to me on Christmas Day, 2007. I'd noticed shortness of breath in the month leading up to that, but I thought I had bronchitis or something. I walked into the Emergency Room, and when they hooked me up to the EKG, my heart was pumping at about 20% of capacity. My Doctor wondered how I was able to walk into the Emergency Room!
I was in the hospital for 5 days. The situation was exacerbated by the fact that I have Atrial Fibrillation anyway, but that didn't cause this episode. My doc said it was a virus that attacked my heart, and that she'd had a patient during the previous summer that had experienced the same thing.
Wow.... Read thought the tread.....
Stop being a douche....everybody understands your point....and nobody cares....
“Ah yes the Demon word....are uncontrollable health problems demons?”
No, but if they can’t convert you they may try and kill you particularly when you are at your weakest. A prayer to Saint Michael may be required. I hope you remember this and never need it.
Way to judge millions of people on the actions of one, bubb.
“The six-time Grammy winner is suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy”
no, i bet it isn’t. it’s alcohol induced cardiomyopathy —
“Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.”
“In August 2012, he was cited after a dustup at a church in the parking lot of Prestonwood Baptist Church.
In November, Travis said through his attorney that he had put together a personal program to get sober.”
I suspect this will turn out to be alcoholic cardiomyopathy rather than viral cardiomyopathy. I hope he beats this thing and gets some help dealing with his demons.
Here is Randy the last time I saw him...at Cowboys stadium back in February at Chris Kyle (American Sniper) funeral.
Thank you for posting!
The low blood pressure is not diagnostic for the cardiomyopathy— which means literally “heart muscle disease”. By looking at the heart function is the best way. The most common way heart failure occurs is after someone’s heart is damaged by a heart attack and it can’t recover function.
The virus is another: I have a dear friend whose daughter at age 41 got a viral infection of her heart (it is a specific virus that attacks heart muscle) and the result was her heart was severely damaged, the nerves inside it and the fibers of the heart— and she died of heart failure as her heart could not pump properly and all of the rest of the body is affected. Very sad.
Alcoholic cardiomyopathy can result from longterm abuse. Good summary on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcoholic_cardiomyopathy
Not sure your question deserves an answer, but are you at all aware of Randy's history? He's been battling the bottle for many years now and in the past couple years it really got out of control. He's talked openly about the battle he's struggling with. And yes, he's a Christian so the demons who want to drag him down are very real.
Oh, and tlb8zs, you’ll be happy to know (or maybe not) I also prayed for you tonight.
Oh, tose pesky metaphors; but what does it matter? Never felt like you are ‘haunted’ by a bad habit - or bad choices or bad health or you have never seen another create for themselves, a demon or two?
:(
He’s always been skinnier than a jay bird. if he has swelled up, not good.. his heart is on overload, may need a dick cheney machine hookup.
Deal with it, Travis. Hoping for ya....
Are you really so stupid as to think these people are referring to real demons? You can't be that ignorant. They are talking about problems, such as alcoholism or drug addiction, things some people refer to as personal demons. BTW, I am not a christian but I do know people who have "demons" of their own. I would hazard to guess you have a demon and it is called hatred of religion and your gross stupidity.
