Box office: 'Lone Ranger' flops versus 'Despicable Me 2' and 'Kevin Hart' surprises

Johnny Depp's gamble on reviving "The Lone Ranger" as a blockbuster action spectacle appears to be going down in flames. The latest collaboration with Depp's "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski opened to a weak $9.6 million on Wednesday. The July 4 holiday is traditionally soft for movie going but things should heat back up through the weekend, at which point "Lone Ranger" will be looking to regain ground if it hopes to recoup a budget estimated to be as high as $250 million.

I think Johnny Depp ‘Tonto’ getup turns a lot of Lone Ranger fans off. I for one have no desire to see this movie.

Dep spends the entire movie with a DEAD BIRD on his head! What did Depp and Disney think was going to happen?

I knew nothing of this production but since one of the characters is a minority I couldn’t doubt that he was the engine of the team and that the guy in the mask was along for the ride. I still don’t know much about the movie but I haven’t yet heard a review that focuses on the ‘lone ranger’ at all. One reviewer called it ‘Captain Sparrow is an Injun’.

I saw a short clip of the making of the movie. It was pretty lame.

I saw it, at the cheap morning matinee. I thought it was good. Not great, but good.

The Darling Days of Disney are Done.

When are the Indian Nations going to protest this. They protest athletic teams that have Native American Team Names/Cheer Characters that downgrade them>

I saw the movie with my family last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It is a farce, similar to the Pirates of Caribbean. Johnny Depp is a powerful presence whenever he is on a movie screen, but the Lone Ranger was not underplayed. If you are looking for two and half hours of laughs and excitement, this is a good movie. If you want a drama with a lasting message, it is not. I will say, being over 50, when the William Tell Overture kicks in about two hours into the movie,it was like a flashback to my youth. So, my short review; fun, laughs, exciting, beautiful scenery, great effects and poignant ending. That is all.

You would be better off seeing World War Z. The soldiers in the movie are awesome and the Isreali army is portrayed as being pretty bad~ass. Plus when Brad Pitt’s wife is assaulted, she doesn’t lee or vomit on the attacker, Her husband shoots at them. It’s really fun more action than horror.

.... I dunno about you peeps but, unless a movie is a massive blockbuster epic type move, I just wait for the bluray to come out and watch it on the big screen. Who wants to plop down 20 bucks a pop to see a movie that will be out on bluray in a few months anyways.

...That said ... I encourage every human being on the face of the earth to go and spend their money at theaters, watch cable TV, and buy DVD/Blurays because it pays my bills LOL.

I agree. I don't have a real BIG problem with movie makers using some artistic license when doing remakes of my favorite childhood shows but these folks went off the deep end and broke it off after landing head first in the muck. The remake to me makes a mockery of the fine efforts that went into making the original TV version of the Lone Ranger.

I originally thought I wanted to see this show but after watching the Movie Trailer for this remake I just thought to myself 'oh God no, please tell me that this isn't so'. What a waste of talent and good money, IMHO.

I am short of 50 ,anyone younger than me might be saying “The Lone Ranger, Who?” What next, Rin Tin Tin the movie? :)
Don’t they test movie concepts first?

How about bringing back some original well-written scripts and solid, heart-grabbing acting, and cut down on the computer generated images about 95%?

I saw it last night..... It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't 'oh wow' either.
Elements of both at times.....but the movie careened from light humor to deep tragedy (cutting a man's heart out, & a few more examples)

Beautiful scenery, which I admit drew me as I have visited the very scenes shown in Utah, Colorado, Texas, Arizona.----outstanding cinematogrphy.

I would not bring kids younger than 12....(but that's just me)

I wanted to like it for a lot of reasons....also as the leading lady ( British actress Ruth Wilson) is my favorite Jane Eyre....and she was quite good in this movie.

I found Depp ridiculous (but maybe that's where he was aiming).....

One of the best parts is the ending which was quite fun, including the William Tell Overture.

I don't think it will do well at the box office.....word of mouth should deter folks, imo.

It just didn't reach the level of 'great movie, must see'...in my opinion.
