undercover agents from the state's Alcohol Beverage Control division mistook her water purchase for beer

the agents—six men and one woman, all in plainclothes—approached suspecting the box, a blue carton of LaCroix sparkling water, to be a 12-pack of beer. One jumped on the hood of her SUV; another pulled out a gun

"They began trying to break the windows. My roommates and I were ... terrified"

The students called 911 as they left the parking lot

agents arrested Daly and charged her with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer and one count of eluding police—each carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $2,500 in fines

Even if it had been beer, this is wrong.

Nonetheless, Chapman "stood by the agents' decision to file charges, citing faith in a process that yielded an appropriate resolution."

"You don't know all the facts until you complete the investigation," he said.

Plainclothes police bust a 20 y.o. buying what they thought was beer at a supermarket, 7 folks with guns drawn and unintelligible badges.

They tell her to roll down windows, but she can't unless the "car is started"(?).

She "may" have grazed one of them after her roommate told her to get out of there. Gets felony charges for that, since dropped.

Are all cops in VA really this stupid? How would they have probable cause unless they knew how old she really was? Was there a simultaneous bust of the store clerk that checked her out - or did they bust the self-checkout attendant?

When the liquor Schutzstaffel officers tried to stop her as she left the store, she ran instead of stopping and showing them what she bought. She and her girlfriend jumped in their vehicle, rolled up the windows, and drove off, running over two officers in the process. Sounds like everybody was hysterical, not just the cops.

Six men and one woman..., seven agents trying to take down one young woman who bought water. And yet, they still think they were wronged in the exchange.

One jumps on the hood, one pulls a gun threatening the women with lethal force..., for buying designer water.

All seven should have gone home realizing they could have ended the life of an innocent young woman, but for the grace of God. No, they had to file complaints that sought to cast themselves in the ‘wronged’ position.

I try to defend law enforcement most of the time. In this instance I can see seven agents in the wrong line of work.

I’m not sure if they are qualified to draw unemployment or not, but they are most definitely not qualified to draw a law enforcement paycheck.

This is part of the Nazification of the US. If the people of her town aren’t milling around at her hearing and protesting, there will be more of the same. there and everywhere. We are all getting used to it.

“Undercover agents” means they were trying to look like everybody else.

So how the freak are the girls supposed to know they are law enforcement?

Of course the girls ran. Of course they drove off when these hoodlums jumped on her vehicle and tried breaking the windows. And pulled weapons.

The girl saw hoodlums acting aggressively toward her and her girlfriend(s).

She did the the right thing.

The MORONS with the badges are lucky people didn’t get killed.

What they did was wrong. What they did SHOULD be illegal.

At the very bare minimum they should pay for the damages to the vehicle. They SHOULD be paying a lot more than that - they should be unemployed.

This crap needs to stop.

Easily the oddest part of this story and something no one has mentioned either in the original article or in the responses here is why were there 7 undercover cops assigned to stop someone from illegally buying beer?

The prosecutors in this country are now the criminals.

If we had cops as attentive to terrorists as they are to kids buying beer, maybe we could all sleep a little easier at night.

It really sounds like a planned raid on the store, known to police to sell alcohol to minors, and they needed some proof PDQ.

It’s a good thing this was VA and not TX. If non-uniformed “thugs” of dubious identification pulled a firearm on me, I woundn’t have fled; I’d have stood my ground and defended my “castle” (in Texas, your car is an extension of your castle - and you don’t even need a concealed carry license to use a firearm to defend your castle).

This could have been a fatal mistake on the part of the police. And. THIS is what happens when you come to believe that your enforcement powers trump the rights of the people. I support police, but seven officers pulling a gun to enforce a potential MIP on a 20 yr old college co-ed is dangerously reckless behavior.

Somebody high up should be fired. Everyone else should be sent back through basic training or reassigned away from interaction with the public.

If the cops were undercover, trying to bust underage liquor sales, seems to me they’d stop the girl just outside the store and take her in to prosecute the folks SELLING to underagers.

This Rambo crap is WAY inappropriate and uncalled for. We are well on the way of duplicating the Brownshirts of Nazi Germany. This is way beyond reasonable - as so many others have said - even if it WERE beer. You don’t handle THAT with guns and S.W.A.T. tactics.
