Putin: Law restricting gay rights in Russia is about “protecting children”

Russian President Vladimir Putin defended a proposed ban to place severe restrictions on the rights of gays and lesbians this week, saying that the measure to limit the speech and free assembly of LGBT individuals in Russia is about “protecting children.”

The “gay propaganda” ban would impose fines of up to 100,000 roubles (more than $3,000) on individuals found guilty of “promoting non-traditional relations to minors,” a provision that is so broadly defined that it effectively turns being gay and out in Russia into a serious legal liability. (To say nothing of jeopardizing the safety of gays and lesbians in the country.)

Putin went on to call gays and lesbians in Russia “full-fledged members of our society” who are “not being discriminated against in any way.”

“It’s not about imposing some sort of sanctions on homosexuality,” he continued. “It’s about protecting children from such information. Certain countries … think that there is no need to protect [children] from this… But we are going to provide such protection the way that State Duma [parliamentary] lawmakers have decided.”

The proposed ban passed the State Duma 436-0 earlier this month and was approved by the upper house of parliament, the Federation Council, on Wednesday. It is now on its way to Putin, who is expected to sign it.

This is SO sad that the Russians can even see what the gay community does to the family and the left has blinders on.

Reid, Pelosi and Schumer evidently couldn't make it in time for the vote.

What? Putin is schooling us on social issues?
“It’s about protecting children from such information. Certain countries … think that there is no need to protect [children] from this… “
At least Putin recognizes how a minority’s issue should be addressed without infringment on the majority.

Stand firm, Vladimir. If anything this measure is too lax. Policies like this should be exported to other Eastern European nations. Screw the EU and barry!

Racist Russians!!! Now, I have to say I am a Christian and agree with Putin! He has made several decisions lately with strength for his country, of course, in my opinion. He understands what happens when you are weak and when you are a Reagan but unfortunately just too many carefree folks in our country are low information and want as many goodies as they can suck from those of us who work hard. The school unions have destroyed morals and ethics as well as the illegals who live by their own rules from countries that use a barter and underground economy.

Who would think we’d live to see the day when Russia defended family values. Marxism was proven in their 100 year experiment to be the biggest flop of a system that can be imagined. Tearing down Western Civilization was proven to kill the human soul and spirit. The coddled Marxists of the U.S., Canada, UK, and France do not know history. The civilization disaster they have wrought will become apparent soon enough. Nikita Khrushchev said he’d bury the West without firing a shot. Well, he seems to have succeeded. His own country seems to know enough to save itself from the cesspool.

The Russians had a near-century of socialism and communism ,which cost them freedom and the lives of 20 or 30 million citizens.

Probably the most evil act of WWI Germany was sending Lenin east on that train.

Communism is the largest impediment Russia has had to face, but the winters are certainly a serious obstacle to growth and productivity.

Ironically, globull warming, if it existed, would be immensely beneficial to Russia.

Without recruiting confused children the homosexual numbers will/would/should shrink considerably.

1973 was a terrible year for America :homosexuality was removed from the list of mental disorders, and abortion was ruled legal.

This is full on theater, to make soviet fascism more palatable to the US, than the Chinese version. We are the stakes, of a game that has already been played out. I am sure the East is preferable to the USSR, and the West will be a challenge to Chi-Coms. You had best be able to ride and shoot to kill, just for starters. Still concerned about imagination/immigration?

Good grief! I feel like I am living in a crazy dream; Putin, the KGB punk, has more moral authority than the US government.
