Barnes & Noble Tumbles as Partners Take NOOK Tablet

What was supposed to be Barnes & Noble's saving grace has turned into a tale of woe, and the final chapter is now written. Barnes & Noble shares were tumbling on today's weak earnings report, falling 14% to $16.21.

As part of the book retailer's abysmal fourth-quarter earnings, Barnes & Noble announced that it would be sourcing its NOOK hardware to a third-party to limit the losses associated with developing and building the tablet.

For the quarter, Barnes & Noble lost $2.11 a share on $1.28 billion, a 7% year-over-year decline. Analysts were looking for a loss of 97 cents a share on revenue of $1.33 billion.

I used to LOVE those stores, then I found out they were big Obama supporters....so I limited my shopping there.

Can't say I am sorry to see them going through tough times.

Maybe they'll ask Obama for a bailout.

Most people think that Barnes & Noble is a library with an Italian Café attached.

I see teenagers and slackers of all ages sitting down reading then walking out the door all the time.

2 B&N stories:

1) Just a few years ago I went there looking for Ann Coulter's current book. It was a best seller, and she had been on TV promoting it. They didn't have it. Pretty surprising. They did mention that they could special order it for me. It would take 3 weeks to come from the warehouse. I said that Amazon could get it to me in 2 days. They shrugged.

2) I wanted to buy a Bible. Picked it off the shelf, went to the cashier. He noticed what the book was, and would NOT pick it up. Using a single finger, he managed to maneuver it over the laser scanner and get a price check. We completed the transaction and he just left it on the counter. No offer of a bag or anything (he'd have to touch it, then, wouldn't he?) It was like a vampire meeting holy water.

B&N wasn't catering to the Christian Right.

Interesting.

I thought they had a 3rd party vendor as a partner.

I like the Nook. Well, sort of.

It’s a POS compared for people like me, who are information creators but, it is a fair alternative to those who are mere information creators.

Still, it needs some minor improvements that are pretty major.

They don’t do copy/paste very well. In fact, they don’t do it all.

That is a major flaw, even if you are only a consumer of information, as you cannot take a thought from another site or even something you created and just paste information that allows you to interact with the Web.

I'm into aviation and military history. B&N, along with Borders, helped drive the good mom & pop magazine stands - the ones with wide selections of the periodicals I was interested in - out of business. I don't buy every issue of every magazine, subscriptions for all of them would be way to expensive, but I probably buy a good 5 or 6 per month to add to my reference library.

Now Borders is gone. B&N started cutting back on its aviation/military periodical selection a few months back. Now it looks like B&N is on its way down (which will leave me with Books-A-Million ... for a while I suppose) Hopefully mom&pop shops will make a come-back, but I'm doubtful.

NOOK has come a LONG way. Full android tablet, partnership w Google to access Play Store, uses Chrome, etc. This was a huge change that hit in last couple of months. Prior to my device was a paperweight. Microsoft and Pearson (textbook co) are two other partners. This news is actually goodfor BN. They are about the books and haven’t a clue how to manufacture hardwear. The screwed themselves in digital by over projecting digital sales before the updates to the devices amd the Google thing all while being expensive. New tablet updates, price drop to be competitive and now a partner which may end up being Microsoft if rumor holds. BN isn’t going anywhere but its going to be interesting to follow their evolution this next year.

I love it when people ignore the dog-eared and ratty copy of the book on the shelf and take the clean copy from behind to take to the cafe and read.

I hate to say it but I'm afraid it's not just Barnes and Nobel that is dying. It's book stores in general, those old fashioned bricks and mortar establishments, that are falling by the wayside. Where I live the medium sized bookstores came along and ate the little ones. Then the big ones like Borders and B&N put the medium sized stores out of business.

Then Borders fell by the wayside.

Can Barnes and Nobel be far behind?

The whole business is victim to Amazon, the Kindle, Nook (if it survives) and a billion tablets with built-in book readers.

I'll miss those great old book stores when they are all gone.

I agree.
But there are more and more little shops opening up. There is a great used/new book store in my area that is actually expanding. They can tailor their stock to the customer base, and are very happy to help.

But I do miss the old stores. I spent a lot of time in college in a very small, but full, Walden bookstore. Then when my bride and I were dating we would go to a Borders and browse.

But I buy most of my books as Ebooks now. That way I don't have to move a ton (literally) of books.

Well I still like my nook. I can download books from my home library to my computer in Australia. Tuff they supported Obama. Didn’t know that when I bought it.

I never noticed people taking books to the attached Starbucks (now gone) to read . they just sprawled all over the floor with books and notebooks spread all around them. Originally there were upholstered armchairs around the store but they got to be so nasty I am sure they had to be burned. After that the free readers took to the floor.

I've been thinking about getting an e-reader, and I'm leaning toward Nook because Kindle is with Amazon, which knuckled under to Governor Moonbeam's demand that they collect sales taxes on items sold over the Internet.

I hope B & N Survives. If it doesn't, the next bookstore is 40 miles away--and I live in a large metropolitan area.

I’ve had my NOOK for several years now and I like it. I just hope it doesn’t go away.

I started boycotting our local B & N after I noticed the stacks of porno magazines displayed behind the counter. I told them why. They went out of business about 2 years later...I am not making a connection here. I don’t know why they folded.
