Democrats fear rights ruling will cost them voters, Texas seats

The Supreme Court's decision to strike a key part of the Voting Rights Act threatens to damage Democrats’ chances at the polls — and potentially cost them House seats, beginning in Texas.

The court ruled Tuesday that the way states were chosen for special federal scrutiny was unconstitutional.

Barring congressional action, that means a number of states — most of them southern and GOP-controlled — no longer have to meet higher criteria to pass voting laws.

The ruling holds big implications for congressional redistricting and voter identification laws that Democrats claim are aimed suppressing minority turnout.

"This makes it much easier for Republicans to draw districts in away that minimizes the opportunities for Democrats in the south, minimizes opportunities for minorities in the South," said former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Martin Frost (D-Texas).

"They pretty much will have free rein to pack as many blacks into as few districts as possible. It's a blow for expanded minority representation in the south as well as for Democrats, and it clearly is a problem looking at voter I.D. laws."

“Elections have consequences”. In Texas the R’s won, live with it.

Texas redistricting always goes to a Democrat challenge when a Republican is sitting in the governor’s office.

That’s what’s at the heart of the Tom DeLay case years ago. Chris Sissy Bell (three time loser Democrat) lost his seat to a BLACK democrat and he was angry at Mr. DeLay so he filed a lame duck ethics charge.

The Chicken-Dees fled the STATE to avoid voting on the districts.

And it continues every decade, but no longer thanks to the Supreme Court.

Only a matter of time until demographics changes that.

Then they will wield the consequences.

Like the Supreme Court reasoned, as neighborhoods become less segregated and more diverse, wouldn’t one expect the number of single-minority dominated districts to decrease? Also, as our society gets more inclusive and less segregated wouldn’t the concerns of communities get more homogenous?

Why is it obvious that we need to have districts with representation ordained to be from a specific minority? Perhaps that time has passed.

"They pretty much will have free rein to pack as many blacks into as few districts as possible. It's a blow for expanded minority representation in the south...."

But it's the original VRA itself that packs blacks into minority-majority districts. Frost wishes he could be free to gerrymander just enough blacks into adjoining districts to turn R seats D.
